Marsh Bucks

Unread postby Sam Ubl » Sat Sep 25, 2010 12:56 am

Dan, what took me so long to put that sucker in the XBox and watch?? I honestly couldn't believe how many thoughts you provoked in me as I watched, the learning curve was higher than I imagined. Hill country was great, but I couldn't relate too much living in SE Wisconsin. While that DVD SHOULD be sold at Gander Mountain, along side Hill Country, for some reason it's not and I'm actually happy about that - I'd prefer to keep your years of experience to myself as I'm sure the other who have see it are thinking.

The only thing I can pick on was Jarrod's subtle voice narrating in the background at times... My what a pretty voice you have, so soft, so sweet :?

So I'm left with a few questions.

1) That MONSTER of a buck you filmed with Rat Slayer while shining - HE WAS HUGE!!! Over 200" for sure! Did you ever lay eyes on him again? While hunting? Tell us the story - how close did you come?

2) The 1 acre plot 40/50 yards off the road - you had a bed picked out under a willow. Did you end up hunting that deer and if so, what was the turn out? BTW - that was so well done from start to finish - I loved that part!

The number one and two things that seem obvious but took watching the DVD to really start thinking about was:

1) The camera placed in the bed, or seen through the eyes of the bedded buck, really provoked thought about tree stand height when hunting in their bedroom. Keep it low.

2) the staging area, or circle around the bed, will have numerous trails stemming from it. How simple a concept, but one I took for granted with respect to hunting closer to the staging area or within to improve your odds of an encounter. The further outside of the circle, the more those trails spiderweb and less likely your odds of seeing the deer using the particular trail you chose of the many becomes.

Escape routes, scouting other hunters, etc... It was hands down, worthy of praise! Thanks - the info was priceless 8-)

I agree Sam.. Some great info in both of these video's.... I learned alot off of both of them... I only hunt hill country (so far), but even some of the info in the "marsh" video applies to hill hunting.... Both are awesome video's.. Thanks Dan !

I got my copy this winter and I have watched it no less that 20 times, finally got a full weekend to hunt ahead of me and I am so excited to get out there. Honestly last Sunday evening I has butterfly's in my stomach as I was driving to my hunting spot. The wind wasn't good for my best spots so I had to take a guess and only saw a couple of doe's but these were two mature doe's (no fawns) in under my stand and they had no idea I was there becase the wind was perfect. Herd them get out of their beds and slowly feed my way, it was great a great feeling to sneak in close and know I could have smoked them. Too long of a drag for a doe so I let them walk.

I was guiding back then and clients got the best spots... One client from Michigan saw that buck but not close enough for a shot. He passed several good bucks hoping for a chance. I never saw it again.
2) The 1 acre plot 40/50 yards off the road - you had a bed picked out under a willow. Did you end up hunting that deer and if so, what was the turn out?

There was a huge buck using that bed and a few smaller ones when he was not there. The buck that I speak of is in that clip shown in a bean field across the road from the bed at night with a spotlight. In a strange twist to fate, I did kill that buck, but unfortunately it was before season with my truck driving past that bed on my way to work in the AM.

Glad you liked the DVD Sam!
If anybody wants one we sell them in the BEAST store.

Okay Dan, let's talk some more about your intersting turn of fate with the big ol' boy you scouted in that movie right off the road. So you killed him with your car on the way to work, that's crazy right there, but just think how fortunate you were to have been the one who hit him. Assuming he's in your garage now? Pictures? Man law (you've used that one on me);)

Thats to bad that couldn't have taken him out in different way!! An arrow thru the boiler room would have been nice.
