thoughts of a rookie beast hunter

Unread postby oldrank » Tue Oct 21, 2014 10:54 am

I knew what he was doing... I knew where he was n how I had to get in on him and I totally played his game n he busted me... I learned tonite that there are no short cuts. Sitting in my tree stand right now humbled. This is not gonna b easy. In this game of cat n mouse he knows all the right moves..he knew I would come down that trail... I knew he knew. Why did I come down that trail? Because I am scared to get lost ? Man up.

Sounds like you did a lot of things right.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

They teach us something with every encounter and that is why I enjoy it so much and what keeps me coming back for more. The buck won this time but bet you learned a valuable lesson for the future. Hunting is a chess match and if we won every time the challenge wouldn't be there to draw us back.

It was a great feeling to know I got my but handed to me. I really learned a valuable lesson tonite... listen to the guys that know what they r doing.. n expect every bed to have a buck in it. He wasnt in the marsh.. he was right on a hill bed over looking the only possible human entry point from the south. Totally secure. I have to get to him from the north... a long long walk through woods with no human trails... but its the only way to sneak in on him.. he will bust me everytime the other way.

Similar to what happened to me the first week of the season. I walked on the buck trail for a very short distance because it was easier, about 10 yards. Sure as hevk b the buck (unseen) but heard locked up as soon as he hit my track and jumped back into the cattails. Lesson learned. Going to try again soon.

to me that sounds a lot like the voice in your head speaking..... listen to it, it learnt sumting today
Happiness is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it, so with that happiness is a choice one can consciously make, although often challenged by what happens to us, it is a choice nonetheless.

Im gonna manuver up from the north tonite.. its about 500 yrds from where I bumped him last night... if he moved in deeper like dans second buck was doing I should b able to get ahead of him... the marsh is u shaped n ill have a north wind.. im thinking I burned the area I was in yesterday so ill let my scent blow there. If he moved he will come in from the west or north...or if he beds on the 900 elevation line then even east...

I executed the plan I laid out earlier today and came in from the back side. I got in very quiet n noticed a strange blob next to a blow down. It was a bedded buck. I was able to sneak right up on him cause it was pretty windy n he couldn't hear me. He got a little nervous the closer I got n finally stood up then slowly moved up the hill. I have to shoot a buck with 4 or more points on a side to fill my restricted tag. I could only count 3 for sure so he got a pass. Also seen 3 other deer after I was in my stand. The stacking theory works. Its always cool when a plan comes together. This is all on very heavily hunted Michigan public. Any time I have close in counters with nice bucks I consider it a victory.

heres a pic... a little blurry... the buck is circled looking at me.. I could have drilled him right there. That was bout 35 yrds. My cell phone doesn't take great pics.
