So I have a ridge I hunt that bucks travel near the top and often come up from the bottom to bed. With thermals falling early in the morning would it be best to approach this stand after the sun has come up ? Thanks.

Re: Got me thinking..
I'm going to attempt this one, but I know others will have better explanations. Obviously, you have to choose the proper bedding area based on the prevailing wind. Access will be critical because you don't want the buck to cut your scent trail while entering his bed. It will help to be able to predict where the buck will be coming from. This will probably be a good hunt to pay particular attention to the o/h and u/f moon days as it will hopefully get the buck to his bed a little later during gray light. I would either try to approach the bed from the top of the ridge or the opposite side of the point you think buck will be coming from in the morning. I would try to get in there really early and get super high over that bed for the best shot at him.

If the bucks are coming up in the am and dropping down in the pm you are going to be hard pressed to kill them with archery gear.
If you are just wanting to hit the thermal tunnel for cruising during rut, yes, go in after the thermals switch or just sit with wrong wind until they do. Most cruising will be after thermals switch anyways.

Thanks. Today I noticed a lot of cruising toward the top 3rd but it was not on the leeward side. These were young bucks though. Any thoughts ?

They will move on both sides, but the biggest and the most will stick to the Leeward side the most...

Re: Got me thinking..
Every day that inches closer to November has more buck movement during daylight hrs. This is the 19th of October. The 20th of October will have more than the 19th and so on. The leeward side is still the best bet and will have more buck movement than the windward side even during the rut. Plus the leeward side is easier to hunt wind wise.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
