White and Red Oaks
I know this information has been posted before, but it is always a nice refresher. I was watching a hunting show and this absolutely drove me nuts. The hunter kept saying that the deer were "hammering these white oaks" and they kept cutting to a red oak that had acorns. Both the acorns and leaves are easily distinguishable if you know what to look for.
The basics. White oaks tend to have longer acorns with smaller caps while the red oaks have a stubbier acorn where the cap appears to cover more. The red oak leaves are pointy and the white oaks are rounded lobes.

Re: White and Red Oaks
A saying a guy once told me is in relation to the leaf edges "the white man shoots round bullets and the red man shoots pointy arrows" always helped me remember

Re: White and Red Oaks
White oaks are easy to spot in that the bark looks like it's shedding or peeling off too.

Re: White and Red Oaks
Great Post. I need to know when a tree is the "hot" oak that is dropping acorns as well. I really need to get better at this.

Re: White and Red Oaks
There are actually tons of different oak types. I have been hunting in one that is considered a swamp white oak and the leaves look different. The acorns are small but they are sweet and the deer love them. I bought a book years ago to learn the different trees and it helps during scouting to be able to identify trees without leaves etc..

Grud,
Could you recommend that book? Or does anyone have any links to past discussions or book recommendations? Great thread?

I've heard this too and have been trying to pay attention over the years to see if it's true or not. It's hard to determine because there are usually multiple oaks in an area and their acorn cycles could be in alternate years so theoretically, there should be acorns there every year.
But I never found an area that produces acorns every single year....it's almost like feast or famine around here.
