I read online that Oak trees do not have many branches coming off the trunk of the tree until very high up. Wasn't sure if this was just false internet jargon or not. Just something else to help identify when scouting pre-hunt.

Umm? Just get a tree ID book and learn how to identify the bark and leaves.

When is prime time for red/white oaks? I might try and hunt some red oaks within the next week.

A lot of times when a property is select timbered by a logger they take the big white oaks.

I've heard this too and have been trying to pay attention over the years to see if it's true or not. It's hard to determine because there are usually multiple oaks in an area and their acorn cycles could be in alternate years so theoretically, there should be acorns there every year.

But I never found an area that produces acorns every single year....it's almost like feast or famine around here.

I don't think this is true. I have one by my house and it produced heavily last year but has some this year too. Maybe they just don't produce quite as much the next year. I've heard this with pecan trees though, but I've seen pecan trees produce multiple years in a row. I would think rainfall plays a part. I've also heard if you fertilize around the tree that will help production and taste as well. I need to try this next year..pick 2-3 trees and fertilize them and monitor the activity around.

awesome, thanks! This seems like a very complete guide to oaks!

I know white oaks are a favorite for deer, but are there any other less common oaks that they will go to over white oaks? I see lots of white oaks especially with acorns and it's hard to find one they hit heavily
