My Beast Strategy & Actual Hunt - help!! Thanks!

Unread postby GloryDaysDesign » Wed Oct 08, 2014 9:47 am

I posted this land in another post and finally hunted it the other night. This is a 368ft mountain tall mountain, about a half mile wide. It is very hard to walk up from the South East. More like impossible without sweating your behind off. I have tried it for 3 years now, and finally decided I need a different entry way in. When I would walk in the cut corn fields in the AM to my stand, all the deer would just run up the mountain and my hunt would be shot. I can walk through the swampy overgrown bottom, but I haven't had much success there, because the mountain is so steep and I don't blv many mature bucks are walking straight up and down the mountain. Obviously I am trespassing a bit by walking in from the ravine and trying to slip in the back. I believe this will be particularly useful during Morning sits, because all the deer are usually in the cut corn at the top of the picture (bottom of mountain) in the AM.

North is at the bottom of the picture.

Wind was out of the WEST-SWest for this hunt. My plan was to attempt to hunt a buck that I had thought may be on the point of the mountain. I also wanted to position myself between him and the primary annual scrape as well as the food, just off wind. My wind was flying right over the ridge out toward the river.

Here is the Key:
Light Red = Entry Path
Dark Red = Property I can hunt
Aqua = Water
Yellow = Potential Buck Bedding
Orange = MY STAND SETUP
BLUE = Annual Primary Scrapes
Magenta = My other stand set ups
Green = historical deer movement I have seen

Things I feel I did right:
1.) Found a bedding point, not necessarily a buck bed
2.). Tried to get as close to bed as possible
3.) Found satellite beds near point

Things I suck at:
1.) I did not pinpoint a "kill" tree and was kind of wondering around aimlessly looking for a tree before my evening sit
2.) Do not necessarily know if a mature buck is using a bed on this property
3.) Have some bucks on cam that I am after, just do not know where there beds are
4.) No idea if buck would go toward standing corn or toward cut corn at night.

I did not see anything that night, but will get back after it asap!!!

looks like they would bed there, but drop towards the crops possibly.

I take it that you are referring to the south east cut cornfield at the bottom of the mountain? Thx for the response Dan!

Looks like you're on the right track. Get permission from the neighbor, nobody likes a trespasser.

I hear you sneakyhunter.... I have hunted all this land for years... unfortunately the farmer lost the section I enter on last year, to bankruptcy... I believe they still farm it... The side of the mountain I come up may also be state land... not sure... in any case, I hear you.
