Recommendations on good public whitetail hunt outside WI??
Hi guys, new to the website. You're all my style of hunters and I appreciate your hard work and insite. Dan's videos are awesome and have inspired me to change my way of hunting. I'm looking to visit another state next year to hunt whitetail w/bow. I have only hunted WI my whole life and find myself trying to make my season last as I love to be in the woods and end up passing up good bucks early that I probably should shoot. Any recommendations on good quality public outside of WI? Was thinking maybe Kansas or Dakotas?? I want to do public, like WIHA land but I don't know where to start. I'm sure a number of you guys do this every year. Thanks for your thoughts!

Spysar hunts Nebraska every year (mix of private and public). Here is the link to the Nebraska Public access atlas:
http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/hunting/p ... /atlas.asp
It can be done. But don't be surprised to find that Nebraska has a small fraction of the public access acres that Wisconsin has with less quality habitat. But, Nebraska also only has a fraction of the hunters you are accustomed to.
I have never been to Kansas or the Dakotas to hunt, but I imagine they are very similar to Nebraska.

Thanks for your info. I've been doing some reading online and there are some good stories, then some bad about locals harassing out of state people in KS. I will check out Nebraska.....
Just looking for a new adventure that has the chance to be rewarding if time and effort is put in!

I would say that people in Nebraska are friendly and helpful, although we tend not to be overly outgoing and generally keep to ourselves. I would imagine that people in the Dakotas and rural Kansas are very similar as all these areas were homesteaded by the same white Europeans. There are bad apples in every bunch, but if you are friendly and not obnoxious; I highly doubt you will have much trouble with the locals.
This is not an excuse, but I imagine that the bad apples probably have been burned by out of state money (lost lease / permission due to influx of out state leasing) and they are still bitter over it. When I was a kid, deer hunting was more of a family, recreational event. My family had over a mile of Platte River ground to hunt for free because my dad was a local and knew many landowners. Then out of state money starting leasing up hunting rights (especially southern states), and the game changed and became much more about money and trophies. I am not blaming anyone, but that is my experience.
Regards, Jake

It may be farther than you want to drive, but I would look into Kentucky. It seems to be a very underrated state as far as the quality of bucks being killed there.

North Dakota and Ohio would be pretty high on my list.

Ken-Tuck-Kay, Nebraska, South Dakota.
If you want to kill a deer you have to be in the woods.

NE and SD got hit hard by EHD a few years ago. They would be my choice as well but wondering if anybody kept up with how the herd recovered. I haven't heard anything recently.

It is bad. NB, SD, IA, and MO. Hence my ND recommendation. It isn't over in these areas. Its just harder than the 2008-2011 years

Re: Recommendations on good public whitetail hunt outside WI
I'm headed to South Dakota next week to do a spot and stalk hunt. I'm looking to try something new and see some new country. I'll be sure to post how the trip was. Best of luck. I would start making calls to state game offices to get a better idea of what you could expect in that state and then make a decision. I think any of the states already listed would be a great choice.
