Swamp Foot

Unread postby Country » Tue Oct 07, 2014 2:49 pm

Since I have started attempting to beast hunt, there is one thing in particular that I am getting pretty used to in a relatively short amount of time. It seems that more often than not, I am getting marsh/swamp water in my boots, on my pants, and on one occasion so far, up to my torso. This evening when I went out, the muck pulled my muck boot right off my foot and into the mud my socked foot went. With temperatures still not being really cold, I'm almost growing numb to the whole thing. I almost accept it as a badge of honor knowing stuff like that keeps most hunters out of those areas. Sort of not looking forward to it happening when it's below 30 degrees, though.

Been there

A good ankle fit on the boot really helps, but mine still sometimes get sucked off. Good times.

Tight boots help... If your hunting marsh or swamp and don't get wet and muddy often, your likely not in the game, your on the sidelines.

Funny - Sunday after a marsh hunt I got home and my wife asked if I fell in. I said no, I was just walking in and out of my spot.

I've had to ride home nearly naked twice in the last two years. Both times I fell in up to my waist in cold temps.

Lessons learned...it's probably deeper than it looks...keep some clean undies in your truck

 I always keep a clean set of clothes in the truck. Another tip is always keep your cell phone in a ziplock baggie.

I sometimes wonder if I shouldn't just walk into the deep stuff right away and get it over with instead of tryng to fight it. Especially covering a lot of ground scouting, 95% probability of me getting wet.

Those wet areas make me think I'm still 365# and not 180#. I can get by in a lot more sketchy areas than I could but still often think im one spiteful root clump giving way from being in over my eyeballs.

Im looking into some hip boots for the cold weather. In the past i have avoided hunting tougher spots in the marsh during cold weather which is probably not a good thing for deer sightings .

The black spruce swamps/beaver ponds have been kicking my but this year, over the boots many times, if I'm scouting and know I'm not hunting I wear old pair of tenner shoes, gonna get wet anyways and alot more comfortable!

I like hip boots with neoprene uppers. Much more comfortable and quieter than full rubber hip boots. I wear mine on stand in colder weather and the neoprene uppers are a great place to slide your hands in for warmth while on stand.
