Gotta doe, fun hunt.

Unread postby GRUD » Sun Oct 05, 2014 11:23 pm

Got a nice doe 144 dressed Sat evening. My plan was to hunt a large drainage ditch and do an observation hunt. Well, the county must have come in and completely cleared about a mile of this ditch. My tree was gone as well as 90% of the trees in this ditch line. Plan B enacted! Since the adjacent corn was not cut an observation sit was not worth it so I decided to dive right into a small wood lot where a storm blew down some huge trees last year. Deer were bedding next to the large trunks of the trees last winter when I did a quick scout so I thought I would slowly slip in and set up right away if I bumped anything. I got to the trees and bumped nothing so I knew the deer must be bedded up a little further atop a small rise in the terrain where they prefer so they can see better. I looked around and set up on a parallel field trail where there were a couple faint trails and signs of browse. About an hour later a couple does got up about 80yds away from where I suspected they would bed and headed my way. I readied myself as they approached and took a trail that angled away from me. I let the first doe pass and drew as the rear doe came into a shooting lane. She was the larger doe. I let the arrow fly when she was passing about 30yds and hit her midship but a little high. Luckily, i clipped the rear lobe of both lungs and she ran only 20yds before becoming wobbly and lying down for the count. The other doe just stood there trying to figure out what just happened before trotting off. I took some photos for fun to show my sticks etc. With the lower stirrup on the bottom two sticks I can get up 17-18ft with three sticks.

This was my first attempt using the Photobucket mobile app to upload pics. We will see how they come through. Thanks for reading.

AWESOME STUFF! Way to stick with it, and get to another spot. Love those blood soaked arrow pics too. CONGRATS on the doe, she looks like a good one

Sounds like a fun hunt! Thanks for sharing pics. Do you always just use three sticks?

Most times I use three sticks, I typically only carry three anymore unless I am going to hill country. Sometimes I only use the two with stirrups and hunt about 13ft if cover allows. I prefer to be lower if I can get away with it to have a better shot angle.

Great doe nice # - nice story & pictures. I think we had something on here about making those loops on sticks. But what did you use & how did you do that? I think I want to add a strap to my stick
