Trying out my first beast style hunt tonight. Got all my gear packed and ready and anxious. Its all suspected beds for me this year as I didnt find many last winter/spring. Thanks for all the tips pointers and advice.
With a W wind Im planning on approaching from the creek at the N end of the map and hitting the "650" point setting up west and north of the suspected bed by 70-100 yards. Going in blind...hopeful.

Re: First Beast Hunt
QUESTION- I sat up tonight at 705 ft. Top of the ridge was 760. There were two trails very close to 705 so I sat up in between them. I was 5 sticks high and spread them out. I was up there pretty good and high. My question-I could not see the top of the ridge. Should I be setting up so I can see the tops but cover the bottom trails?

The idea is to setup to be able to hunt over the wind tunnel. You want to be able to setup to allow you scent to blow over the top of a bucks nose while he is walking in the wind tunnel.
I hunt some hilly terrain, and almost always when I setup above the wind tunnel, I cannot see the top of the ridge.
The spot you were setup at, what was the lowest elevation below you on your map? One other thing I was going to mention... you said you had a west wind, were you setting up on one of your maps waypoints?

Re: First Beast Hunt
A lot of times I find that at ~25 feet at the military crest I often can't see the ridge top. But if anything comes from above I'll generally see it soon after it breaks the ridge line. Where we hunt the sides are steep enough that you can't see the top but are relatively close

Re: First Beast Hunt
Backstraps- bottom was 600. Top was 760. I was at the creek where it makes an S curve near the "650" hoping for a bedded buck on the point facing east there...nasty steep. I couldnt have got into it without a good wind helping me traverse the incline.
I was worried Id be eyeball to eyeball with a deer on the top or below. I could just barely see the too of the ridge but not the ridge top.

Re: First Beast Hunt
I would say you were very close at the 705' In what I have found the tunnel will vary from place to place depending on the terrain and elevation etc. The top 1/3rd is a good starting point.
I like how your phone app shows the elevation increments on your map. Most I use shows the bold contour per 100' rather than every 50' as on your map.

I think the app is GPS Trimble Hunt Free. It does good enough for me.

Re: First Beast Hunt
Fellow Hoosier, dont overthink this and be so focused on your maps and technology that you miss what is right in front of you! Take the milkweeds and let a few fly while on stand and you will learn more about that spot than any map could teach you.
