Hunting deer over acorns
When I was in college and I lived in Southern Illinois I used to love hunting over white oak acorns as they would normally begin dropping around Oct. 1 which is opening day for us. Now that I have moved back home to Northern Illinois it seems that most of our acorns are gone by the time the season opens. When do your acorns drop where you hunt, and do you hunt over them when they do?

Unfortunately, there are no oak trees on any of the properties that I hunt.

N. IL as well, and usually they are just wrapping up for me on the opener. Makes the few left a hot ticket for me the first week usually.

I am hearing a bit more dropping this year than in the past few years over here in my section of Mass.

Re: Hunting deer over acorns
Here in the south we have acorns dropping all of hunting season, which runs Oct 1 - Feb 15. I don't think you'll find a better method to kill deer than a hot oak tree.

My best success hunting acorns has been when the oak Ridge is right up against a thick swamp .

Our acorns start in early September for Post oaks & Sawtooth Oaks, early October for White Oaks, and late October / early November for Red Oaks.
And yea it's hard not to hunt them, they're everywhere here. One piece of Public land close by estimates a good decent year will produce an average of 400lbs / acre of acorns. That's a bunch.
