swamp/marsh safety

Unread postby sam » Wed Sep 24, 2014 5:28 am

Are there any stories or has anyone come across and dangerous situations while going through these areas. I never really hunted a lot in swamps and was wondering what kind of dangers I should b looking out for. Obviously trying to go through deep water is one. Just curious as to what others have come across.

floating bog is about the worst thing ive came across. ive busted thru and caught myself with my arms at armpit level and didn't feel the bottom. not fun in the dark with a stand on your back and ice cold water. this certain place is one I will only hunt with a friend just for that reason.

Floating bog and muck are some of my favs, canoe tipping over because I'm trying to push through some more muck/bog are the big ones for me. Crossing beaver dams can be interesting too. General falling down and getting lost in the dark is pretty standard too.

The best advice I can give is to just slow down and watch every step.

There are numerous dangers in the swamps I hunt, it would be quite a list. Your primary concerns are not getting lost and not falling out of your treestand and fracturing your pelvis... or worse.

Make sure someone you trust has your lat/lon or a map of where you will be hunting and don't be lazy about it.

Always let somebody know where you are. I tell my wife the general location and then text exact gps coordinates BEFORE climbing my tree. Lot's of things can go wrong in marshes/swamps and you have to take more precautions. Anytime your dealing with water there is much more danger lurking.

Some good pointers!! When I was in my teens I got caught up in some muck and had a heck of a time getting out. Since then I have been Leary of going deeper into a marsh other then the outer edges. There are some areas of interest deeper into a marsh near my house that I keep getting gut feelings to check out. Sooner or later I will get back there lol

Rolling your ankles on uneven ground. I've seen little tree saplings chewed down by beavers leaving the bottom half of the tree sticking up out of the ground resembling a punji stick ready to impale anything that falls onto it. Yeah, slow down.

Getting lost is one, but getting bit by a mocassin is my biggest issue. Being 2-4 miles back that would be a real problem

Anyone consider clear safety glasses for the walks out? :) Anyone use some kind of soft bow case on the way out?

I've considered safety glasses, I've been poked in the eye once or twice bobbing and weaving through brush. I do use one of those bow slings that covers the cams and cables for a little added protection busting through brush, probably doesn't do much but it has no real downside.

I agree on use of safety glasses.

Just going through marsh you not only get poked in eyes/face area but that cattail fluff can get in you eyes too causing issues.

Losing a boot to muck.

Having to retrieve that boot.

Not realizing the phone in your pocket is under water.

Dropping something, anything. Good bye.

Large Reptiles.

Getting lost.

West Nile.

Getting peppered by duck hunters.

Subsequently getting yelled at by said duck hunters.

Otters. (Don't laugh, they are evil)

Bad shot on an animal just before dark.

Actually having to drag an animal out of there, in the dark.

...

That cover it?

On a duck hunt a couple years ago my friend went through a bog up to his armpits and couldn't touch the bottom. We didn't even know there was that much water below us...
