Frequency of bed use..

Unread postby kwaldeier » Mon Sep 22, 2014 10:11 pm

I was walking on a path I have had for years for vehicles and walking when my wife called. I stopped next to a clump of trees and talked for 5 min or so. When all of a sudden a buck busts out from his bed at 10 yards! He is the white dot on the map. The wind that day was from the SE. My guess is that he was watching that path facing north and had the wind and a corn field to his back.He has a field of bird grass north. Judging by the bed it does not seem that used IMO. He exited to the west fence line and looked to be a 3.5 buck i have on camera.what do you guys think? Would he be back on this wind to watch that path? How often is this bed type used? Does not seem to be primary bed..

It looks like it is used a lot to me.
How often does someone walk/drive down that path?
Looks like he faces east.

Depends on the time of year really. We have cows back there we need to check frequently for calves and food.. Etc.. Until they are taken out of there.. The bed looks muddy to me because we have had a lot of rain. Not a lot of visible hair though.

The spot on the pic looks like a pretty typical place for a buck to bed. The bed looks pretty well used to me too, at least during this time of year. Depends how far the bed is off the trail and how thick it is, he may not be too disturbed by someone driving or walking by. The fact that you stopped to talk so close to him is probably what made him bug out.

Looks like a well used bed, I'd think it would be a great bed to hunt early season and move onto other beds after that.

That bed looks well used. Maybe there is not much for hair/scat because that buck may have recently moved into that bed after breaking from bachelor group???

I agree map looks like perfect buck bed area.

Looks like a good farmland bed. You won't see as many well used beds in farmland from my experience. They tend to move around and bed a lot of different places due to the options they have available. However, that is a well used bed in farmland!! Hunt it and see what happens.

I agree a well used bed in farm land can be a gold mine.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

What winds do you think this is used? Seems like mostly winds from the south. That is a pretty small clump for me to try and get close. 20 to the north before it's open... Tricky

He probably uses that bed on a wind similar to the one that was blowing when you saw him there..
