Anyone try some tree climbers

Unread postby Thermals » Thu Sep 18, 2014 3:55 pm

I used some tree climbs tonight and practiced hanging a stand to see how silent I could do it and man it is pretty silent if you don't rush it. The down fall you can't use them on public land but for privet they maybe my go to. A good buddy of one mine has been hunting that way for years and swears by them on getting close to deer. Just thought you guys may want to give them a try.

Are you talking about tree spikes like lineman used back in the day?

It's not the knowing that's difficult, but the doing.

Well those are called pole climbers made for climbing phone poles. Tree climbers look the same but they have longer spikes made to climb trees

I think a mobile stand is more comfortable in the long run. Plus your limited on shot angles should a situation change on you, for instance, if a deer got behind you. Great for cutting as you need to face the tree when working. I personally prefer having the tree to my back when hunting.

You can carry a stand up with you. It just eliminates the need for sticks.

Yes one time up, I have to say it works pretty good, I need to stealth strip my stand an put something on the bottom of the climbers from clanking when I step up on the stand but than that it is like being a squirrel lol

I used them in school and i can say for me they are no fun. lots of splinters in the arms grabbing onto the pole when they slipped out. I also had a teacher that would shake the pole when you were up there. The first day there we watched a video that showed someone falling with the belt wrapped around the pole. He looked like a wood pecker going down. I don't know if they would be any quieter then putting up steps or a climber as hard as you should kick them in. They would be faster just make sure you have a at least a 1 inch heal, i have seen them slide off the back of a boot and then your screwed.

I used the pole climbers and tree climbers through the 60's, 70's and into the 80's. Best method all around for using loc on stands in my opinion. Just be sure to use safety belt and keep a good angle out from the tree so your gaffs don't cut out.

I use them at work...on tree removals. I rarely use them for pruning as they do damage the tree. Any wound - whether on a person or a tree - is a pathway for disease.

That said,I have used them for trimming "crap" trees like box elders...and twice I took them out for winter scouting when I had particular (crap) trees in mind that I wanted to prep.

I'd never use them on "good" trees

Spikes can be noisy. Also,be carefull on skinny trees - I once spiked the inside of my calf. 2" spikes,2" deep hole. Once I looked, there was a Liiiiitle bit of "hamburger" poking out the hole...

I use pole climbers a lot a work so I thought I would try the tree climbers because I liked the idea but like seeds said. I made more noise than I wanted so I went back to sticks.
