How high up in the tree?
I've been noticing posts on the site of guys getting it done low in the tree.
Last year I got my buck 7 feet up. Best cover was at that height.
Growing up I was taught the higher the better. I never really knew why. Just assumed so they wouldn't see you.
Anyone else like to hunt low?
If you hunt up high, why?

Re: How high up in the tree?
It's definitely a debate I have had with myself. I was up about 12 foot last weekend and got busted. Not really sure why because that is where most of the cover seemed to be. I would prefer to hunt low because it takes less gear and effort. Hunting high allows you to see more, but I also think it makes shots a bit more difficult because of steep angles. Maybe there is no right answer. Looking forward to others responses.

Re: How high up in the tree?
Early season I hunt much lower due to better cover. As leaves drop I move higher.

Re: How high up in the tree?
Standard hunting answer "it depends". Let the tree and situation dictate the height. I like to hunt near big branches, double trunks or anything else to help break up my silhouette.

I take 4-5 sticks. Sometimes I use 2 and sometimes 5. All depends on the situation and available cover.

Re: How high up in the tree?
I have always just went to the height that had good cover. Could be 10 feet up could be 20 or anywhere above, below, or in between. Which usually depends on the time of year like Dewey already mentioned.

I like 15-18 feet. One of the biggest reasons; I like being up there.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Try 35 you can see a lot when the leaves are gone in hilly terrain but you look to your other side and you are eye level with the deer lol

Re: How high up in the tree?
This weekend I brought 2 mini sticks with me on Sunday. Ended up only hunting about 7-8 feet up and the deer never noticed me (smelled me though). Incidentally, this is also one of the reasons why someone would want to hunt high... to keep the scent stream up and over a trail. My best public buck came when I was 8 feet off the ground. Most often I'd say I'm between 14-18 feet.

I'm in agreement with the other guys... I really think it's about having the best cover more so than anything else.

Re: How high up in the tree?
I'm all over the place. On the ground to 40' high. 18-20' is my sweet spot on level terrain. There is no right answer to this question. For me:
Scent "control" is #1. If height gives me a significant advantage with my scent stream, I'm going higher. You'll never get a shot if he smells you before he gets to you.
Shot execution is #2. Higher generally results in less shot obstructions unless dealing with a thick canopy. I'd rather have a shot than a good shot angle.
Cover is #3. Cover is great, but not required. I rarely get visually busted since I switched to predator camo. Sitting still is underrated.
