I used those dirt smelling ones long time ago. I don't think they improved my odds and once that smell gets on your hunting clothes, its not coming out. Dan then revealed to me in the spirit world inside a sweat lodge that I had been put under an evil spell brought on by the dreaded pixie dust. I was cleansed of all evil manifestations. Then I had to throw away some stuff because the dirt smell does not go away.

Those scent wafers are a synthetic scent and I just about guarantee that a deer can tell the difference between them and actual dirt. A hunter might as well spray down with cologne before hunting.

I'm certainly not gonna lose any sleep over it if I forget my little earth scent wafers, but I like to have them just like I like to have my grunt call with me (although my grunt call is a lot more important to me ;) )
