What is closest to the road you would hunt?
One of buck beds is just below an abandoned house about 40 yards from a street. To hunt it properly I'd almost be visible by cars going by....may be a nocturnal bed, not sure yet.
Wondering how anyone has hunted to a road and what the pos and negs might be...besides people laughing at me!

I had a stand that was less than 10 yards from the center of a county road. I caught a nice 8 point crossing there on a regular basis and it was the only place I could find to set up...killed the 2nd sit there.

One of my best spots is 30 yards from the road. It actually a spot I try and ambush bucks that bed about 20 to 60 yards from an old abandoned house. I think bucks learn spots next to roads that hunters overlook and commonly use them as spots to travel/live in.

Could care less of what others think. Id go with whatever the laws say you can do. Lots of states are different as to the acceptable distance from a road.

I have hunted off the ground 5 yards inside the woods line. Whatever it takes.

Re: What is closest to the road you would hunt?
I have a pinch point where a deep swamp and thick bedding comes together 30 yards from a very busy route. This pinch produces many deer every season, but the noise of the cars going by is annoying sometimes. The stand is in some white pines so you cant see the stand or hunter from the road. Make sure that you don't flag the stand or mark your trail access. Being so close to the road it would be an easy target for a thief.

I found a great public land spot this spring, Morel hunting, that is ready for a North wind this fall. The tree is maybe 75 yards off the road, tops.

Hunt it. Good chance it's a day bed if there isn't normally any activity there. It could be a good overlooked spot. Some of my friends and I have had success within 30 yards of a road. I just prefer not to shoot if there is a car about to go by just in case the deer heads that way when shot.
You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.

WI law states that it's illegal to hunt within 50 feet of a roadway's center or discharge a bow, gun or crossbow across or within that same 50 foot zone.

I have a few spots under 100 yards from roads. I see alot of gun hunt stands built close to roads here in WI. Not sure if they are lazy or smart hunters.

I shot my biggest buck, 170 class 13 point about 80 yards off a road. Both sides of the road are bedding areas along with travel corridors. Only part that sucked was he died in the ditch with his head on the pavement. Made for an easy drag but sucks when there is a crowd at you deer before you get to get to him.

Don't care what other people think but I'd stay far enough away so nobody see's you just to keep other guys from finding your spot.

Good point here. I would hunt wherever it takes!
Although not roads, easements and logging roads in the woods are great travel lanes.

I've found beds not 50 ft. from a guard rail. Nice corner of a field were the bucks watch the hunters enter the gate and drive into the field to their box stands. There are 4 or 5 in that general area with a huge staging area with about 100 rubs in it. Those deer are slick.
