Information Overload

Unread postby msailor » Fri Aug 22, 2014 6:19 am

How do you guys keep track of your hunting spots? I've really been stacking up stand locations and find it hard to keep them all straight  , I have rut stands, bed stands, doe stands, etc, all of which have differing wind preferences. I have used an excel spreadsheet in the past but was wondering if other beast members have been a little more ingenuitive with their organization.

At one time I kept most of my notes on paper and still do to some extent but now enter much of it into my Garmin Oregon gps or Antler Insanity app on my iPhone.

Stored on my Garmin and then uploaded to Google Earth and caltopo.com. To decide on a stand I can quickly view them in the computer and choose based off of wind etc...

Dewey I have heard of AI, I will check it out.

Jackson, I organize mine in GE too but the problem I run into is a property may have 15 different placemarks. One might be in the middle of the woods on a bench or it could be next to a buck bed. Right now, I'm relying on intellect but as I progress in my 30s I'm not sure I will rely on that much longer. I guess I could always go under the properties of the placemark and enter comments....

I use a composition notebook with hand drawn maps and notes about location, wind direction, and sign.

I label my stands with SW, NW, etc to denote which winds I can hunt the stand on. If a bed hunt I of course mark the bed and access route so I don't bump the bed etc.

I use an excel sheet that will sort by time of season, primary, and secondary wind directions. I also use this sheet to track stand site prep in the spring / summer. That AI app looks good, downloading now :)

Jason, I really like the idea of adding a filter to the spreadsheet.

Could you snap a screen shot and post later?

I used an Excel spreadsheet, organized by wind direction and add notes about buck beds, seasonal food sources and past observations.

Access database. I create a new TPS report every time I go hunting.

Spreadsheets are nice but what do you guys do to recall all of the spots when you are actually out hunting. Many times I think I know where I am going to hunt before I leave home but depending on changing wind conditions when I get there I can change potential spots 3-4 times. Having everything on my gps or phone app at my fingertips is very valuable.

I save a picture file of each property I hunt, and mark up stand sites and bedding areas on them and try to update it spring and fall based on scouting and such. I print out a copy to take out in the woods with me scouting and hunting. To keep it simple I have a simple code based on color and shape of symbol for instance a square is a tree stand location and a triangle is a ground sit spot, the color green is for early season, blue is for the buildup to the rut/end of October etc...

Every year going into the season I go through everything and draw circles around each spot I want to make a top priority. THat way the choices are a little less intimidating....down to the top 20-30 spots instead of 50+
