Talking to a great hunter and even better friend the other night, the topic came up regarding a bachelor group of bucks frequenting a piece I hunt. Two are real big, another is big and gnarly, and two others are young but nice. I mentioned my best shot at tagging one of the big dudes would be the first couple days of the season if the group stays together until then, but the odds of the group splitting were pretty great. Of course they may frequent the same food source, but the patterns I was seein now would inevitably change by the time I get up a tree in mid-September. I would suspect the dominant buck(s) would get the run of the place, but bucks like some space so the future remains up in the air after the group splits. That's when my good friend shared an interesting observation he's witnessed on more than one occasion.
He said he had a group of 7 bucks of all sizes coming out in the same corner of a bean field all through August and te days leading up the season. Opening day brought all 7 out single file into the field presenting him with shots at all except the biggest one who browsed just outside of comfortable range. The next day, 6 of those 7 bucks followed the same pattern, but the big one never showed. Two days later, he visited the same set and this time 4 of the remaining 6 showed, and notably the 2 larger of the remaining 6 were missing. At the end of the week he sat a different spot and yet, encountered the same group, but one more in order of size had disappeared.
Has anyone else witnessed similar schema of the big ones seperating first on down the line until the whole bachelor group is broken up?

Re: Bachelor Group Dispersion Observation
this makes sense because those older class bucks are going to want to be dominant. i often get the biggest buck on my place with a lead young buck all through the rut. that same young buck is always around that big one until that big one locks up with a doe

Isn't it possible as time went on that the smarter older bucks just avoided the spot since he was hunting the same general area leaving scent behind each time?

Interesting. Makes me think though about first time sits being your best shot again...perfect visual for things getting less and less each time they are hunted.
