acorn status

Unread postby lungpuncher1 » Thu Aug 21, 2014 12:47 am

I went out yesterday to trim some shooting lanes and check a few cameras. One of my cameras is set up over a salt lick that is only a few months old and the main reason I've been getting pictures from it so quickly is that's it's right beside a great trail \ funnel. Well this time I checked it's gone from 200-300 pictures every 3-4 weeks to 80 pictures after 4 weeks. So I did some investigating and only about 60 yards behind the camera was droppings everywhere and acorns falling like crazy. Seemed early to me but they are without a doubt falling and getting ate. My question is if these 2-3 trees are dropping and getting hit hard right now will it be a safe bet they will hit them on our opener on sept 27th? Also why are these white oaks dropping so early? This is in east Tennessee.

Yep, the whites are dropping, that is a little early but too far from normal. The squirrels are after them also.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

White oaks were still green when I checked last week. Should be dropping in the next few weeks.

acorns up north by me this season would be great! My area is full of stands of red oak that have been barren for 3 seasons now. Bumper acorn crops are vital to my success up there ;)
