Mature shed buck.......shoot or pass?
This poll is related to the other shoot or pass poll asking if you would shoot a mature one horned buck.
Quite a few said antler inches do not mean as much and just killing a mature animal is much more important.
So in this scenario you have a very mature buck in front of you during late season but he already shed both antlers.
Do you shoot or pass and why? Curious about your thoughts on this.

Pass. If it was only about maturity, I'd target old dry does.

Regretfully pass. It has to have antler/antlers. I think maturity is more important to me than antler size but some kind of antler is a requirement.
Dan's "midget freak buck" comes to mind, a shooter in my book, amazing animal.

The fact that the buck is mature is what makes it such a special animal. The antlers help tell the story, no matter what size or shape they are. without them the story is incomplete.

Pass. just like the other thread.
I shot a one antlered buck one time on accident. I wasn't happy with my mistake. Looked all over for that shed too
A deer with no rack is a definate no no to me too

Re: Mature shed buck.......shoot or pass?
I was faced with this dillemma during the CWD Holiday Hunt in 2012-2013. I passed. I knew what buck it was b/c he had lost half his ear at some point in his life, so he was distinguishable. I have his sheds from the previous year when he was 3.5, and found one of them from when he was 4.5, which was when I passed him. Honestly, I'm not sure what I'd do if I were faced with this decision again as this buck was hit by a car two weeks later, so it always sat with me weird, and still does to this day. I didn't answer the poll yet, as this thread is getting me thinking again on what I should've done...

Re: Mature shed buck.......shoot or pass?
pass for sure. When the buck drops the horns... he won the contest for that season. I would tip my hat and say well done old fella! Well done! Then I would fly an arrow or muzzloader round over his head to let him know ... I got the drop on him! Joking of course.

Re: Mature shed buck.......shoot or pass?
Been in this situation many times late season and passed on every one.
I will admit that I love the antlers and without them the hunt just wouldn't feel as special no matter how mature he is. Something about looking up at the wall and seeing a shoulder mount, euro mount or even a basic antler plaque that is really special to me. I enjoy looking at them a reliving the special memories of that particular hunt.

I was one of the guys who said age was more important than rack score and I stick to my statement. However, I would have to be able to legally tag it as a buck to satisfy my desire to kill a buck.

Could not answer effectively... MY dilemma would be;
If I thought it was a resident buck - No
More time to hunt in the season - No
A passer through and last few days of season - Yes

I would add "Maybe" for you guys but then the poll would start all over again.

Comparing this poll to the other I'm curious why one antler makes a difference in deciding if you kill or not.
Where I was kinda going with this is 1/2 would kill with one horn but almost nobody would kill a completely shed buck.
Still the same deer so why the change of heart? One horn doesn't exactly display well.
Anybody chime in...........
