Acorn issues?

Unread postby Mike » Mon Aug 18, 2014 10:43 am

I have noticed som acorns dropping in the last week or so, but they are all small and green, like they are immature. Is this a result of the late spring and was curious if anyone else was seeing the same, and what effect might this have for the fall?

I see this every year, and usually its caused by a storm that came through and blew some out of the trees. The green ones aren't ready yet, glass the trees and see what the rest of them look like. I just spent a week scouting my spots for this fall, and acorns are what I look for. Glass the trees to find the ones that have a bumper crop, and set up on those, especially white oaks, as they will drop first and are preferred over other acorns by whitetails. Make a note of the red oaks and water oaks that have a good number as well, as they will drop later, usually late october and into November.

Maybe not the whole state but there was late april snow in a lot of it, and cool temps.

Seems we have a bumper crop of acorns around me Sw Mi. All the trees I've seen are full of big fat green acorns. Although I did hear one or two dropping while I was shooting my bow tonight I think they were just blown loose

Very few acorns around here this year (sw mo.). No whites to speak of and not many reds.
Thought it would have been a good year.
