Thoughts on farm country hunting.

Unread postby kritterkiller » Sat Aug 16, 2014 5:27 am

We'll as the title states I spend 90 percent of my time hunting the farm country of SE Michigan. The other 10 percent is left for the Shawnee on southern OH. I have hunted this farm for 16 years now. Unfortunately I share it with a number of hunters that are nowhere near as obsessed as myself when it comes to deer hunting. I've been lurking on this site for about a year now and am amazed at the info that is available from all of you guys. There are a few issues that I have zero control over. One is neighbors, then other is access. I have to walk thru the fields to get to the woods. I can glass most of the farm from 3/4 of a mile away so that's a bonus. However I can't see the swampy area that's due north of the farm that's where I spend most of my time. I haven't been hunting it till the third week in October the last few years. My main question is where would you hunt based on the aerial photo?? Hopefully I can edit the photo and get it attached.

Well if someone can school this rookie on how to post a pic via mobile that'd be fantastic. Thanks!

Download the photobucket app. After you upload your image into the app there is an option to copy the link. Post that link here & it should work.

The green would be stand locations and the orange is known bedding areas for doe groups mainly. Some small bucks would be included as well. The power line is about chest high and the deer feel very secure in it. On wet years the swamps will hold some water too

beat me too it. Can you outline the property lines and possibly zoom in on the swamp/wooded area? Also, is that a road that heads up to the swamp to the left of the farm?

Kritter, elevation is huge with bedding, so a topo may have helped... Based on flat land assumption, I would assume the bucks on your property are bedded at the red dots, or along the transition lines marked in red, or within the blue circles. I would put up stands based on the trails coming out of the bedding areas.

My only access is thru the crop fields. One of my routes is in blue and the other is my neighbors. The hay was planted last fall and the corn and beans are rotated every year on the farm. Image
