CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT

Unread postby Redman232 » Wed Aug 06, 2014 8:07 am

I noticed the other day when I was shooting the string on my release was a little frayed. Instead of fixing it immediately I decided I would shoot this week and fix it this weekend. It broke mid draw last night and sent my arrow somewhere in the corn field behind the house. So just a friendly reminder to keep an eye on your gear, treestand straps, cables, limbs, bowstrings and releases. On a lighter note, my form must be pretty solid because even though the release broke, my fist punched me right at my anchor point.

Good reminder to stay on top of equipment repair. Many big bucks have survived another day because of failures like this. Glad to hear yours was while target shooting.

One time I tripped and dunked my release hand into marsh muck, rinsed it off in marsh water and continued hunting. A few days later I forgot about it and was target shooting. Just as I came almost to full draw the muck caked release mechanism when off and I punched myself right in the nose creating a bloody mess. It's pretty funny now looking back but I felt like a real idiot at the time for not maintaing my equipment. It was a lesson learned for sure.

A timely reminder as a lot of hunters don't start shooting until now or even a week or so before the season. That is yet another reason I am glad I shoot year round, everything gets kept in better condition than when I was a seasonal shooter.

I do a visual check before every hunt. I have everything marked on my bow. Sights, peep, rest, and the string loop all have markings so I know if anything is off. I also draw once before I leave to double check that everything feels ok.

:handgestures-thumbup: Good tip, we work too hard to let equipment cause a mishap or blown opportunity

Thanks for the reminder. Sometimes a good punch in the snoot wakes you up to reality.

Been there, done that. Bloody mess. I learned it is OK to update old reliable every now and then.

Self abuse at the range is never recommended ;)

Great reminder though...

Yep, now is a good time to check over everything. You still have time to repair or replace any equipment. There is nothing worse for me, than trying to get used to a new equipment during the season.

Took my bow in and new string is on order. Half dozen arrows. Should be good for a few more years. Stay safe guys.

Great tip and glad to hear nobody got hurt. Good luck this season everybody.
It's not the knowing that's difficult, but the doing.
