How to get harvest deer across a 35 foot creek.

Unread postby Jimmy wallhanger » Thu Jul 31, 2014 9:08 am

Title is self explanitory. I have access to a nice chunck of public land. a creek devides some serious thick woods that im very confident no one bothers to go to other then giant swamp donkeys. The only access to it I have found is a creek that is about 3 feet deep and 30-40 feet wide. I just got my waders to cross and am going out saturday. Im excited.

My question is when I kill a deer early how can I get it across the water without contaminating the meat. I plan on field dressing it prior to crossing. Should I wait until I drag it through the creek then field dress? My concern is the meat spoiling, but the water could also damage it I think I would not drink the water. . I have no canoe or anything. I plan on dragging the monster back to my hatchback lol. Im probably overthinking this but want some idea's if possible.

Thank you in advance.

I don't think the meat would get tainted. I have drug deer across water before. Wash him out when you get home.

Agree with Stan. Same experience. They float better undressed though.

The water probably isn't any worst on the meat than let's say a guy shot deer. I'd just field dress and drag it across.

Gut shot is much worse than a little water.

I've drug a lot of deer across water. Like bucky said they pull across it pretty easily if there is no heavy current. I have a lot of bucks cross water after the shot, and I usually gut them and drag them through it, followed by rinsing them out like Stan mentioned. Either way will work. 8-)

I nick-named him Marinade
He was out all night in 58 degree temps water was slightly cooler...
He was fine eating.

I've been told to spray any exposed skin/meat/flesh w/ 50-50 water and vinegar...
Keeps bacteria away.

If the ditch is deep you can run a heavy rope across the top Of the two banks and tie a rope to a caribener and tie a
Rope to the deer and easily pull him across. I have video of this somewhere

I'd gut him and float him across. It will clean the rib cage out real nice and if its warm out help cool the meat down. Plus, if you can get a buddy to take a picture, it would make a great photo!

I've heard of guys taking a life jacket and strapping it to the deer. If it will hold a full grown man, it should hold just about any deer.
