Marsh Buck

Unread postby Brandon » Thu Sep 09, 2010 2:42 am

As some of you may know I am an avid waterfowl hunter. Come Dec and Jan I hunt 3 days a week atleast, and usually do very well.

Over my 8 or so years of waterfowl hunting, I have jumped NUMEROUS bucks from cattails & swamps, and have seen monster rubs in unexpected places.

Ive also personally jumped 2 giant mature bucks from beds in marshes where they chose to escape through the water! 1 was a big monarch 20 some pointer jumped from a public marsh and he swam across a river to an off limits area of woods.

The 2nd was last year. I new this buck was in my duck pond as ive seen him in years past and rubs like ive only seen a few times. I can not buck hunt here, thats why I never hunted him. I only waterfowl hunt at this property.

I didnt see the deer bust out, but Im positive where he came from.. he attempted to swim the width of a 2 mile wide river, only to turn back. I have a video on my cell phone of us coming up on him, and we gently forced him back to shore where he ran to another block of woods.

Notice the marsh reeds tangles in his rack.

Heres when we are coming up to him. This deer was putting up a wake simlair to a 12 foot vbottom with a 5hp on the back! He swam better than ANY... ANY duck retreiver Ive ever seen. I was impressed, we could never get infront of him to see him head on, he would just turn and swim another direction. Instead of risking him drowning since he was 200 yrds in a river at this time for 40-60 minutes we gently followed him back to the shore.

I like the cattail or marsh grass hanging off the drop tine and the main beams!!
He would be mounted just like that if I shot him!
Awesome picture. :D :D

 You have a GREAT place to hunt waterfowl that's for sure!! Can you maybe get in there for bowhunting? I'm sure you have already tried, but sometimes people will let you in for bowhunting only and not gun. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing those GREAT pictures.
