I like Lee's approach; however, I had issues with the licking branch breaking at the base if I only used screws to attach. Hence why I went with the ratchet and single anchor screw. Some guys make holders or use battery terminals to hold the licking branch. I haven't tried this yet.
As for the rubbing tree, I've been starting the rub with the saw blade.
Great topic BTW. Nice to see something fresh.

They are getting more and more interested in them, still don't have a pic of the bucks rubbing the post, but they are smelling them and the ropes, I'm hoping the next time I pull the cards in a month, I will have some rubbing, but I'm not holding my breath....Lol
This is awesome!!! I see a water hole in background. Did you use a back hoe to put that in? Also see plactic tub for them to drink out of in the other pic. Do you just allow rainwater to fill these up?

Seth.....
One of the holes, I had a buddy with a cat dozer dig it in for me, about 20 yards down off the ridge. The plastic tubs I got at Menards (120 gal I think)..... I use to use a 55 gal barrel cut in two pieces ( length wise), but the deer would drink all of it up in about 2 weeks here in October, so I now went to more volume, I'm hoping to get over a month out of a fill up.....
Yes, I count on the rain to keep them full during the summer, because the deer don't seem to drink from them much then, but once October comes around, they pound them, so rain water would not be enough...... So I fill them up by hand, I can haul 6 five gal jugs of water on my 4 wheeler, and I usually try to fill them up around late morning or noon time...
The hole dug with the cat though, seems to hold enough water throughout the fall and rut time.... not sure what it holds for gallons, but I have never had to add to that one, as it must be deep enough and gets all the run off the hill from rain.....

Sorry, I didn't know how often you check your cams. I don't use them, so I am completely out of that game.

Its been said before but wanted to post this pic..this needs to be done yearly but as far as rubbing I think a willow of poplar will out do a cedar post. This willow was stuck in the ground thurs and pic was taken sunday. This is a buddys land, he has cams on a few and is checking tomorrow so I may have somthing to post soon.

So softer is better in your opinion? I never did a side by side comparison...
I picked cedar as that is what I typically see rubbed the most...or at least the most big sign post type.

Re: My rubbing post & Licking branch project
I prefer them because they get hit faster than the cedar posts (and logs with bark) I have put out. If you don't want to replace them every year or whenever they rip them out of the ground, the cedar post is better. These get hit right away starting when velvet comes off, whereas the cedar stuff on my land only got hit from now thru nov typically.
