Do you hunt hill country river bottoms or is it flat. We have a major creek bottom that runs at the bottom of a large ridge. The creek seperates the woods and large cornfield. It's 1st time hunting the area and not sure of how to hunt bottom. Should I hunt it at all? Keep hearing about hunting up high. Should I just stay up on ridge?

I know the question was directed to R.R. But wanted to say you should probably scout the creek bottom and up high... Each situation is different.

Re: What has been your most successful strategy?
Since 2012 I've killed two 3.5 yr olds and a 4.5 yr old with bow.
All were bedded within 150 yards.
Setting up on bedded bucks is best for me.
Two of those bucks I assumed were bedded close due to wind direction and preferences of beds. I was somewhat confident they were there but in my mind told myself "ok...it's going to happen"
Mental strategies play a big role in it all for me.

Mostly flat land here but I've hunted both. Scouting thoroughly will dictate your best potential spots. If you post an aerial I'm sure you will get some good input.

Re: What has been your most successful strategy?
Regarding hunting creek bottom...in one particular spot that is similar to what was described...ridge dropping off to bottom then to food...the bucks never made it to the bottom before dark. This was further impressed here by some of Dans info. I observed on at least 3 occasions, bucks browsing about 75 yards up the ridge as of waiting for dark. I never made the connection until reading about it here or it may have been Dans videos. Either way...lesson learned...up higher for me until I see otherwise from now on.

Re: What has been your most successful strategy?
For hunting creek/river bottoms in hill country, how do you play the wind? I hunted them some before I knew anything about hunting and can remember getting busted some. Seems like the wind would swirl off the ridges too much. Is there certain winds that make hunting them down low do-able? LIke a wind blowing in direction of the creek/river? I'm hunting some new state forest land this year and there's tons of creek and good travel signs along the creek bottoms. Some bottoms have some very thick growth as well.

The best strategy that I have is not hunting a spot unless the conditions are correct for that spot.

Hunting where the bucks live.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: What has been your most successful strategy?
I think being in the woods and giving yourself the opportunity. To me being there to observe helps me in changed movements, hunter pressure, fresh sign etc. without being there boots on the ground it has decreased my chances. I've only taken 7 mature bucks but it's been in the last 6 seasons and I'm getting on more and more. I would also like to add information gathered from other hunters who are knowledgeable and experienced.

Would you explain this more?
From talking to friends and my observations I have noticed mature bucks before the rut are almost like "peeping toms". They are off at a distance 30 yards inside the field edge just watching the does eat out in the field. Its almost like they give them a little cushion of distance. Not quite hanging out with them, but keeping an eye on them from a distance. Is this what you are talking about or are you talking about bucks who move into doe home ranges and start using the same trails the does use?
Be in the woods as often as you can....and as long as you can!
