Cool buck beds. Spring scouting trip.
Finally got a chance to spring scout the properties I bow hunt in PA. So much fun, but very hard work…
Here are some of the cooler beds I found:
This bed is on a tiny hump within a small thicket on a steep hillside, note the view downhill:
Trail going downhill led me about 50 yards right to this:
If this buck is dropping downhill in the evening he is nearly unkillable under most conditions.
This bed is on the end of a high bank where a small bowl forms and a small creek bed runs into a larger creek. Buck can watch both creeks from bed. Really kicking myself for not getting a pic of the view from this bed...
Track along creek:
One of many impressive rubs in staging area:
This bed I thought was really cool. I actually had an encounter with a buck that I heard get up from this bed several years ago. I knew there was a bed in there, now I know exactly how to hunt it…
Walking along a logging road on the top 3rd this caught my attention:
Fresh scrape in May I figured a bed was nearby:
20 yards below the scrape was a well worn bed on a small hump along the steep hillside littered with hair and big tracks. This bed can be stalked from the logging road with a bow and a just off wind.
This was the best traditional bedding area on the property, Steep point setup for predominant wind direction. Littered with rubs, scat, hair and very well worn beds. Basically fort knox of buck beds:
View downhill:
2nd bed, underneath the fallen tree:
View up towards the beds from just below them:
Although I like sharing pics of buck beds, part of me hates it because the pics never do them justice for just how strategic their placement is...

Yea, I forgot to mention the shed. That was the first bed I came across on the trip and it had a shed in it which got me all fired up. Unfortunately that was the only shed I found. The property was walked by a logging company and they marked over 400 trees. They had ribbons hung all over the place, looked like they walked every inch of the property and since everyone in PA hunts I am sure they snagged any sheds they saw.
Yea, I love the beds that have cover over the top. It's like a little buck hotel. Lol.

I have hunted PA every year for the last 13 years. To me, it feels like I am home when I am up there.

Forgot this series:
Couldn't tell if there were 2 or 3 dead deer total. Lots of bear scat around the carnage. That is a size 12 boot

Those are really cool photos! Getting ready to order both DVDs & see how to apply the info to FL woods/swamps. Bedding here seems so random although now after joining The Beast, I'm sure it's not.

Some areas are pretty 'random' down here because there are what seems like infinite excellent bedding areas and beds and low deer numbers in most of the state. But if you get into certain terrain that fits the profile the bedding is very predictable and exactly as described in the DVDs. Good luck with it.
Best thing is to get into an area with good deer numbers and limited preferred and predictable bedding. You will find the deer stacked into those bedding areas.

Cool stuff Palmeto. my uncles have a camp in Elk with and end holding on the Alegehney NAtional Forest. I think I remember you saying you were hunting NW PA? I trout fish up there usually this time of year but have never hunted there. My moms side of the family is from up that way. Its a cool place if you like to hunt and fish.
