Thanksgiving week bowhunt

Unread postby GBTG » Wed May 21, 2014 4:13 am

My son and I are looking for an out of state public land bowhunt the week of thanksgiving.
We don't gun hunt here in Wisconsin and he basically has nothing going on that week at school as everyone is off gun hunting.
So it would be a good week for us to camp and bowhunt some public. Got any ideas where bow is open and doesn't interfere with an ongoing gun season?
Thanks,
Dave and Hunter

Iowa if you have any preference points and apply for the their permit lottery real soon.

IL's first weekend gun season ends the Sunday before turkey day so IL is an option, but the orange army would have already pressured most of the public lands. There are some very remote areas of Shawnee National Forest in far southern IL.

I am not sure when states like Michigan or Minnesota have their gun seasons but that might be an option also if you are looking to stay in a nearby state.

Try Nebraska. I think kids both resident and nonresident tags are like $5. Never been but know a few who do and have done OK on public.

I agree with ed and MO is a decent tag. Here is an idea that sounds promising.
Gun season is running at that time (or maybe the doe part of gun season) and if you go to a bow only area the odds go up.
Buy a gun tag, use your bow. Outside pressure will send deer to you and most folks who are normally hunting that property will sit back waiting for bow to restart. Or went somewhere else to gun hunt.
It only sounds complicated! And MO conservation are pretty decent to deal with.

I have a buddy that lives near Galena, KS. He has killed some giant deer on his farm, but there is a small public tract less than a mile down the road from his farm that has the same creek running through it. The KS tag is expensive (bow), but the gun season doesn't come in until after December first so the rut action is great around Thanksgiving. If you go that route I would stay in Pittsburg, KS, and make the 20 minute drive to the parking spot daily. Plenty of deer and not too much pressure. There are cars there regularly, but with bow n tow you have plenty of area to hunt. If you choose that route let me know.
