I was walking around this area couple weeks ago. I was walking the transition line and came across huge deer pellets. I found what appeared to be a bed. Right under a big tall pine. Just littered with big droppings. I put a pin where the bed is. There were several decent size rubs to nearby. What wind do you think this buck would bed here on? And since there is water to the south , would thermals come into play if the wind died down at sunset? Would the thermals send my scent towards the lake???? This is generally all flat ground.

A couple questions you may want to ask yourself. First, where is he staging? Probably in that woodlot? Second, where is the food? My guess is the deer would stage towards the food, until dark. Then move onto a crop field or food source after dark if there is one near by. Good work finding the bed!

There is no crops. Lots of red oaks everywhere.
Just assume the purple pin is the bed. But I think it's a seasonal bed. Summer/early fall

That bed could be hunted with any wind by selecting different trees for the different winds. With out know where he is likely to head after he rises from his bed it makes it hard to speculate. Your entrance and exit route would be the biggest determining factor on what winds to hunt that bed.

Guess would be he beds there in a north and east, or north east wind. Looks like he could see fairly well to his west and south out to the field.

I agree because the humans would come from the north or east. I'm just wondering what the thermals would do on a north wind since there is a body of water to the south and west

Yeah maybe I could try glassing but it's really thick out there, hard to see

Re: What wind for this spot?
If there is only one bed, on which side of it is the pine tree? Likely, thats the direction the wind will blow from. Bucks put an obstacle and the wind asgainst there back often whjen bedding in somewhat open areas where they can see down wind.
Lake thermals will pull your scent toward the lake when calm if the water is warmer than the air, like at siunset when it starts to cool down.

Re: What wind for this spot?
I'm not positive it's a bed, but I figured it had to be. There was a ton of droppings all around the tree trunk. A few white hairs. With the pellets being so long and big and a few rubs close by I assumed and hoped it was a buck bed. None of the other pines or trees had that extreme amout of droppings under it. Maybe I'll go back this month and take pics
