Crappy year for trail cam

Unread postby muddy » Fri Sep 03, 2010 1:29 am

The first buck in line is the one I showed you all a few weeks ago and I'm guessing he's done growing. Maybe in the 130's as an 8 pointer and 5 or 6 1/2 years old if I follow his pictures from 2007.

Not sure if I'd shoot him until he's under me this fall but I really like those upturned beams... a lot.

I certainly hope you're right MO. I feel like I've been banging my head against a tree this summer trying to get something decent on cam.

Muddy,

did you put out any mineral supplements this year? I had a post awhile back with my recipe and it really draws bucks into it during August. I typically get their pics and can ascertain most likely where they are bedding based on the time and direction of travel. It helps out; I put out 10 mineral licks in strategic locations and this has helped me get an idea what bucks are living around the area.

I put out 2 mineral licks this summer and they got pounded during June-Mid August and then only does hit them. Right now we have a bumper crop of acorns on my property and my guess is that's where the majority of the deer are as my cam hits have dropped 90% in the past 2 weeks. Since the acorns are touchy I"m not going to walk back in there just for cam pics. Time to move them to big alfalfa areas and see what's messing around in the dark.

I'm not terribly worried, the farm I have my cams on is notorious for bucks moving in once crops get picked next month. It's also one gigantic funnel so the rut makes it even better.

Still would've been nice to get something big on cam this year. The only 150+ I got was a 3.5 year old deer that should get the pass, next year he'll be a giant.

hey muddy it seems like bumper acorn/hickory --everything this year. crops are drying early.im hoping those acorns are done early personally.cause my woods are loaded with oaks(white included) so it actually makes it difficult. i leave my cameras on field edges near the crops and have one certain buck i would have a hard time passing if he walks by. id love for him to get at least one more year but dont know that i could let him walk. i had a few others that looked older body wise earlier in june that dissappeared so id love to get some hard horned photos of them with racks complete. good luck this season!
