Saw a hard-antlered deer today - no joke!

Unread postby bowhunter15 » Tue Apr 15, 2014 1:47 pm

My house is surrounded by a couple wooded city parks. It's not all that uncommon for me to see deer around the trails while on a run. But today, something unique. As I came up to a corner I could see a large and small doe. No big deal. I made it about 25 yards away before they started getting skiddish and took a bound off the trail. But then I noticed a third deer a little further back. It had a 7 or 8 point basket rack, no velvet. It was clearly a rack from last year that had not dropped. Can anybody think of a reason why this happened? Just a random sample at the far end of the bell curve? Genetic condition? Weather related?

Must be well fed. Heard of this before and maybe even a few weeks later. Wonder if he will still be in velvet for the opener?

I saw one last weekend that was no where near a basket rack. He was probably a 130 inch 10 point. Was in a field with several others and he was the only antlered deer. Shocked me that he had both sides still holding on.

I live in Waukesha county WI which has some good genetics and food. We will see some horns as late as mid-April.

Saw a nice buck a week ago with both sides.

You hear of it here and there, very surprising this year with the snow though...

Wow, crazy. Here I'm always afraid of bucks dropping their antlers during late season. If I were a deer, I guess I know where I'd go to live :D Kind of like a big, unfenced zoo in that park.

I've seen them in April before, never big racks though.

We still have antlered bucks here in KY...no wonder I only found one shed this entire spring, and the one I found was in my front yard!

I agree mostly scrub bucks. This was the first year i saw a good one holding in April. I do know there have been more over the years though. I find drops in obvious places that I looked in March.
