Buck Bed Help Dan and Everyone Else
I was back at my little food plot checking my Predator Trail Cam and saw the owner of the field diagonally from mine and thought I would say hi. We got talking about the little clump of bush at the tree line and she told me that she did not own it which I did not know. She said that the land owner lives a few hours away but does not let hunters in. Anywho... when she left I took at look at the little piece of woods . To my amazement I found the bucks bed and lots of rubs.
I got a trail cam pic from my neighbor of the buck(not alot of deer where I live) but have not got a pic myself.
The buck most-likely beds there with the wind to his back so he can smell predators from behind and can see approaching danger in front.
I have glassed this spot a few nights but only seen does and not the buck.
Don't pay attention of the purple box in the pic.
I use an Alpha Hang On, so I am mobile.
North is at the top of the pictures.
I don't know how to hunt this spot because there is not enough cover to conceal my movements or set a stand.
Thanks,
Stuart

Re: Buck Bed Help Dan and Everyone Else
You have to clarify something for me. You said you don't have permission where he beds but yet you circled the bed area in red and and said you can hunt in the red.

Was wondering that myself.
Can I also ask what the black is? Is it rich soil or ceiling netting for pheasant enclosures?

The way I read your post you don't have permission to hunt the spot anyway!!?? I may be missing something here.Stuart wrote:I don't know how to hunt this spot because there is not enough cover to conceal my movements or set a stand.
It looks like water to me (or shadow).Sam Ubl wrote:Can I also ask what the black is? Is it rich soil or ceiling netting for pheasant enclosures?

Re: Buck Bed Help Dan and Everyone Else
Sorry guys about not being clear . I cannot hunt inside of the little woods. But could you guys tell me a place to go outside the little woods. Besides, there is not enough cover so the buck will see me approaching and bust out as soon as I step foot in or get close.
My only idea is to hunt this spot just outside of the woods on the tree line when the moon phase is right so I can get him when he is coming to his bed. Only problem is the wind but if it was just right it would blow to the right of him (hunt very high up).
My guest is that the buck beds there before sunup, walking into the wind to make sure there are no predators waiting for him. Then he will bed with the wind to his back which will be his 2nd pair of eyes and look straight ahead to see arrogating danger. What do you guys think.
The "Black Stuff" is ginseng but it is gone now.
Thanks,
Stuart

I don't think this is an ideal morning spot as you can't get close enough to his bed. I see about you only option is to set up when the wind dictates on the fenceline for an evening hunt. Which opens up a whole new can of worms, as what if he dies on the neighbors land where you don't have permission. Tricky situation. Lets see what others say.

Can you slip in from the South just inside the big woods and set up on the South end of the thin strip of woods/brush/fense that comes down from the small woodlot? This would be an evening sit.

Re: Buck Bed Help Dan and Everyone Else
Personally I would glass it from a distance or find his sign going in and out and set up on the sign.
The majority of bucks I have observed move to bedding either walk with the wind at there back, or with no attention to the wind. Seems to me they want to be able to smell predators coming that are following there track.
The exception, if you want to call it that is hill country where the bucks seem to want to circle and come to the bed from below mostly, even though in the dark or early morning there is usually a dropping thermal. However shortly after light and the rest of the time they are bedded, the daytime rising thermal blows up there track to there nose.

Re: Buck Bed Help Dan and Everyone Else
I am still a little unclear with that Dan. Do you mean quickly check the area to see if there was hot sign, then take the lone wolf off the back and setup right then and there??? Couldn't he see me? If you were me, describe the location that you would setup on and why or any other helpful tips (moon guide buck coming late ).
Thanks,
Stuart

Re: Buck Bed Help Dan and Everyone Else
When you looked at the bedding area where you saw the beds and buck sign, did you take the time to look where the buck enters and exits from?
I would set up just out of sight of the bedding area along his exit rought for an evening hunt. If I were going to chance a morning set up I would be as close to the bed as legally ( without trespassing ) possible, along the entrance rought.
If you did not take the time to observe entrance and exit trails you need to walk a circle around the bedding area without trespassing, and without getting directly up wind till you find his trail and then set up and hunt.
However, you may be more successful in this situation by setting up where you can observe from a distance and not hunting there until you see the buck on a pattern.

Re: Buck Bed Help Dan and Everyone Else
Thanks Dan!
I think I will take the time to glass and make a pattern of the buck.
What if I don't see him while glassing throughout September?
Could he still be using the area but coming out after dark (cannot shine.)
Thanks Dan,
Stuart

If you don't see him stick his neck out of that little woodlot in daylight he probably ain't in there, or your glassing the wrong side.
