Cedar Rubbing Posts

Unread postby Sam Ubl » Tue Apr 08, 2014 2:07 am

I know this has been covered on the Beast, but it's usually commentary here and there in various threads. I think there was a thread on it specifically back when the Beast first started, but I can't find it... SO, who has run to the local lumber yard or Home Depot, picked up a couple of cedar fence posts and set them on their land with successful rubbing results?

I'm interested in hearing what size post you got and your locations for setting. I tried this with zero success a couple of years ago and thought it was either the location or maybe the finish of the post (it was squared off, not round).

Tips? Thoughts? Success stories? Suggestions?

It's funny you bring this up Sam....... I just purchased some 4x4 cedar post a few weeks ago, and I am going to put them in next weekend.... Mike has a great thread on this but he took down some of the images, you might be able to pm and see if he has any pics to look at..... I'm hoping for good results, but I'm not banking on it...... I did the contrast thing like he mentions, and I also took a grinder and took off some of the sharp corners..... I'm also putting a licking branch off the top of them.... with a rope hanging down.... here is the link he had...

Here is one of them I made up.... I used a steel pipe at the top, and I will tie some real branches on to the pipe when I install the post....

It's an awesome thread. I may do this in a couple staging areas out in Kansas where there aren't very many rub able trees. To put it into perspectibe the they rub gas right of way signs all of the time  They are hour glassed shaped from repeated rubbing over the years. The bucks literally go out of their way at night to rub these posts. I think in the right location these will be deadly.

Couple pics I snapped last weekend. Both cedar post and poplar got hit but they hit the poplar harder and sooner, as soon as velvet sheds vs more in oct on the cedar post. I put them all over. The more wide open the better. Size I stick to a medium sized rub, the more different bucks that hit it, the more scent, so I don't go too big so the smaller guys hit it too

What is the genesis behind doing this?

Inventory or hunting or both?

I do it for shot placement primarily but do have a spot or two that are just to get buck pics.

I found this cedar (12 inch diameter) while scouting and antler looking this spring. There were a couple more just like this one in the area. I did not find a specific bed but the area is full of old buck sign from years past. I will probably set up a camera and see what happens. It is surrounded by a nasty area and tough to get to. :D

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Yup, that's a good one. Probably a sign post rub with a bunch of bucks hitting it. Good find

My goal is to snap a few good trail cam shots and get some decent trail cam video of bucks hitting it - more for the cool factor than anything else. I don't plan to hunt over them.

Using them for inventory seems like a great tactic
