Dilemma about a find on private land
I found this last week while scouting. Assume someone has used it in the past to bait deer. This is private land that I am not the only person that has permission to hunt. Would you remove it? Contact DNR? Or just leave it be and make a mental note of it?

Is it illegal in your area?

if it's illegal and it's not my land, I'd mind my own business. if I were hunting that land, I would make sure to hunt far away from it so I wouldn't get pinched.

If baiting is illegal at the very least I would let the landowner know about it and leave it up to him how he wants to handle it.
If he gets pinched later for illegal bait on his land that he didn't know about he may kick everyone off his property.

Re: Dilemma about a find on private land
If baiting is illegal in Indiana, contact the land owner and ask what they want to do about it. If they are fine with people baiting on their property(assuming it is illegal), I would find greener pastures. I have dealt with baiters here in MN(baiting is illegal here) and they usually are not too considerate of other hunters.
It's not the knowing that's difficult, but the doing.

Yes, it is illegal.
My guess is he will say he doesn't care. He is old and doesn't get around much. I will still let him know I found it and then let him decide what he wants to do.
My initial thought was to just leave it be and not worry about it as it is in an area that I wouldn't target as a good setup.

X3 on telling land owner if illegal. Let him know you don't want trouble. Your just looking out for him.

Do what your heart tells you to do... However, keep in mind, making waves often means that you end up loosing your permission.

Re: Dilemma about a find on private land
let the landowner know there is illegal activity taking place on his land. he might be thankful you told him, if not i'd think about finding new ground to hunt. if he is allowing baiting what else does he allow? if we all just turned our heads to this kind of thing we are not really sportsman at all.

I would definitely let the land owner know and leave it in his hands.

I would let the land owner know in a very casual manner, see or feel out his reaction. If this private is good and worth saving go from there.

If it were me taking a guess, I would bet its a coon feeder that a guy runs dogs off of.

I thought the same thing when I saw it, but the hole is too big. That would let any animal get into it. We made coonfeeders with a much smaller hole that required the use of their hands to reach in and grab the food. Looks like a gravity fed corn dispenser.

Re: Dilemma about a find on private land
From past experience, I would monitor the area with a trailcamera to determine who is the owner of the feeder. With proper evidence, I would then approach the landowner and ask him how he wants to proceed. If no one comes back, just remove it.

Re: Dilemma about a find on private land
In Indiana, baiting is illegal to take deer, then they say an area is considered baited for 10 days after removal of the bait and any affected soil. As is usual in Indiana, it is vague and open to interpretation....is it illegal to put bait out for the purpose of getting trail cam pics which could be construed as the process of taking deer...or aiding in the taking of deer....
