FOUND: My first buck bed in my hunting life
Okay, I am very pumped because since digesting the Hill country and marsh bucks DVDs last season, I promised myself I would scout out public land in my area for hunting buck beds.
I went out today with a topo and I walked to a suspicious point on the top and BAM! several buck "beds" in a small tight area on the point. from what I learned it is prob the same buck using diff. spots because there are clusters of saplings and trees rubbed right beside the beds and also big buck turds in the vicinity. There are tracks, hair in the beds and even see the indentions from the elbow joints pressed into the bare dirt.
Fresh rubs and rubs from years ago. I am pumped about this but also I feel like "what now"? Like a teenager that doesn't know what to do with "it" lol
I squatted down in the beds and took inventory of the bucks field of view and really there are 2 directions i think he would go. DOwn the point to a CRP field or head NORTH the ridge to a ag field that is on private land (the corn field is only about 150 yards NORTH of the bed where the ridge flattens and widens. I also found rubs leading up to the beds with the rubs in a line facing AWAY from the beds to the WEST so I assume this is his route into the bed because I THINK he would bed there on a west wind so the wind would hit is back and he could face south east and watch while taking advantage of thermals. I may post a screen shot and get you guys' expert opinion.
I really didnt pick out a tree and I wish I would have. I found this bed around 5pm and it is raining right now so maybe my intrusion will be pardoned with the rain washing my scent away. I will go back
with the lone wolf and pick an actual tree.
This is my current assesment as a newbie to this. I also found several doe bedding areas with defined beds and hair spread out like Dan shows in the DVDs, wow it feels good to put some of the knowledge to work and finally go looking for and actually finding beds for the first time in all the years of hunting and "scouting" I did.
EDIT: Here is the location of the bed. My thinking is that he will bed there with a northwest wind while taking advantage of thermals from the valley floor. In the evening rise, and head north to the yellow area "corn" which is about 150-180yard north of his bed on the ridge. Tell me where I am wrong in my assumptions please. Thanks!

Nice find. I agree with your assessment. NW wind is ideal, but he may use it on a N wind too. If the day starts out with a NW and switches to NE he may just shift and stay on the point, but If it starts out NE I think he is more likely to bed two points up off the SW corner of the corn.

Nice!
Your assessment is good. Now get it set up for hunting and find more spots before spring green up stomps your fire out.

Great post and that's an exciting find! Gotta love it when a plan comes together. Get it set up and count it as an egg in the basket... then its back to work to find more eggs... after all, Easter's on its way!

Congrats, looks like you found a classic hill setup. I'd get in there & pick trees for both exist routes asap. Then monitor his activity with a cam in the corn field.
