When does "early" season end

Unread postby briar » Thu Mar 27, 2014 4:29 am

Lot of folks on here seem to have good early season success bed hunting with what I am guessing is catching deer on summer patters. When does this window end and things start changing? Our season this year doesn't even start til October 5

I think of Early season as "before gun season" and late as "after"... But, if you had a progression of Early, rut, gun, and late season, then I would say Early season ends sometime in mid October.

Alot of it depends on location and season dates.

Before, NY started bow season Oct 15th. Now, it's Oct. 1. In my area, I'd say early season ends Oct 15th. Then it progresses into the slowly increasing pre-rut activities heading into end of October and rut going into early Nov.

I agree with the mid October time frame for the end of the early season here in WI. Around that time things really start changing in a whitetails world as they head into the pre rut.

Early season summer patterns are pretty much done after the first week or two of the season when increased hunting pressure changes their habits. Our season opens mid September.

X2. Early season is mid Sept - mid Oct. Mid Oct kicks into pre rut.

Good question!

I break down early season as up to Oct 25th. Its pretty arbitrary, I just try to pick a date so I can split up things when reviewing my hunting log, and right around that date is when I start to see the first seeking/chasing activity. My thinking is when most bucks are on normal bed-feed movement and not rutting movement thats early season.

I consider early season the month of September to the first weekend in October. I call the following three weeks of October the lull. The following 4 weeks I'll break down the rut stages. Then the late season run out.

Early is before I or other hunters mess up their patterns...in my mind....really though I think it's mid October right as pre rut activity gets going

I will go with early season being the first two weeks of the season. After that pressure increases an changes patterns.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

I've always considered Oct 1. the end of "early season", That's about the time I stop seeing them feeding in open fields. By October other hunters on my properties and the neighbors have put enough pressure on the area to get the deer spooked.
