Situation: While scouting for beds following a recent snow I found the classic bed setup. It was on a point that was surrounded on three sides by draws. The bed site provided great lines of sight for anything approaching on three sides. The entrance to the bed was along narrow finger which is the bedding locations only perceived weakness (he could be effectively hunted in either his approach or departure from the bed should he use the finger to enter/exit).
Issue: The bed does not take advantage of the the predominate wind direction. As a matter of fact for this to be an iron clad setup from the bucks perspective he would only use this bed on a handful of occasions during the hunting season.
Question: What are your thoughts about a buck occupying this bed when he didn't have the perfect wind for his survival?
I'm inclined to think a mature animal would only bed here infrequently and only when the wind offered protection from the "unprotected" approach.

Re: Buck bed
Are you sure the wind is not in the bucks favor. Hill beds can be wind tricky for sure. I would do the milk weed seed wind test to see what is going on.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Buck bed
Do it now and get a tree picked, plus you'll see the milkweeds float better without the leaves on the trees too,

Re: Buck bed
Yes. The bed might be being used on the wrong wind, but mature bucks, probably not. They probably bed there on the correct wind.
Another observation in your post:
I doubt the buck is entering the bed this way... It is possible, but in most cases they come in from below. Your most likely looking at the exit trail (evening) which is much easier to see.
