Do you get busted from what bucks sense more?

Got to thinking about this. We always talk about a bucks great sense of smell. In reality do you get busted by a bucks sense of smell or his other senses? Just wondering what others experiences are? I do realize that we get busted quite often and don't know it, but with a buck in close how do you get busted?

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Smell... I don't think I've ever been busted by a buck that I know of other than smell

While on stand the nose and its not even close. If I am on the move then the sight and sound come into play a little more.

At one time I had a huge problem with getting spotted in the tree by all deer not just bucks. Since I switched to Predator camo I rarely if ever get spotted anymore.

Been busted by sound enough too. Dried mud falling off boots, clothing rustling or bow creaking while drawing.

Sense of smell still will bust you every time if they get downwind.

I said smell... But if you include walking to and from the stand, noise is right up there too... Thick nasty brush, crunchy snow, dry leaves, and the sound of the bow drawing or moving to shoot have all caught me a few times. I am generally set up good for scent, but certain terrains and spots are harder to not get busted than others.

Sound and sight walking to the stand. I would say same in the tree. Im usually able to set up so the buck doesnt get down wind of me. Thats always my main goal.

I voted smell. That is probably even more exaggerated if you take into consideration how many deer circle down wind and bug out before you even know their there.
It's not the knowing that's difficult, but the doing.

What type of hunting, stands or stalking?

I put smell.

However, I bet there are a bunch of times people get busted reaching for their cell phone, swatting bugs or shuffling to get comfy that don't even know it!!!

Deer have uncanny ability to see the horizon, if you are perched 15-20 feet above the ground and the deer comes in @ 75yards I bet he will pick up your movement easily

There was a time not so long ago that I would get picked off by does a lot. I always try a little more when does are around check wind or thermals, video, draw for the heck of it. I rarely see a buck make me though. I am sure they do it without me knowing it and I also behave a whole lot different when I see buck.

I've often wondered how many times a buck may have winded you and did a 180 (or something similar) to avoid you and you never knew it...
If you want to kill a deer you have to be in the woods.

I am confused as to how everyone is getting picked off by a buck smelling you. :? If I set up on a buck I have a pretty good idea of where to set up so I wont get winded by the buck I am trying to kill. If I get picked off by a buck I'm after its normally not his nose that gets me.

If you set up close to a bed the chance of that buck seeing you or hearing you is much greater than him smelling you downwind. I'm almost certain most guys are setting up downwind of where the buck is bedded. If you are not, then I can see how you would get busted by the buck smelling you.
