Hill country and deep cut

Unread postby Bowhunter4life » Wed Feb 05, 2014 4:19 am

In hill country and hunting above deep cuts on the leeward side of the hill. Who all has had success in doing this? Is your success in this tactic mainly during the rut or has anyone had any luck with it catching bucks bedded on points coming around the cut in early or late season? I know that this would probably depend a lot on food source and the direction the deer is going to get to that food source but I would just like to know how many of you use this tactic and have had success with it?

Yes I have killed bucks in both rut and early season in a cut...more during the rut though just random cruseing ...in early season it has to be the right conditions for the cut to work..for instance the buck would have to naturaly be bedded on a point near the cut. My bowkill this past fall I ustlized a cut as a pinch point near doe bedding. During thr rut..years past this cut has been good to me ...lost a few a got a few

I have had a lot of luck hunting the tops of draws, or "deep cuts" as you call them both in and outside of rut.

Mainly during the rut for me too. Bedding tendencies on deep cuts are more cryptic IMHO during the early season when dealing with a lush forest floor. The only way to break it down is to sit in each bucks bed early in the summer following green up and evaluate the best route out of the bed based on cover. If it doesn't happen the first two weeks of the season, I'm resting the local until the pre-rut.

Thank guys. Wasn't sure if these spots would produce during the early season or not so I appreciate the replies.

Makes for a great rut funnel, shot my best buck that way.

When the draw or deep cut as you call it is right along side of a bedding point, yes, it can be a great all season hunting spot, and one that has worked well for me.

It has worked for me during the rut when near a doe bedding area.

How does it work for an early season set up? Are the deer bedding on the point and moving past the deep cut on the way to feeding/water?
