New season structure in Wisconsin.

Unread postby dan » Thu Jan 23, 2014 9:56 pm

Hello Dan,

I attached a summary of the latest Deer Trustee Report rule summary that came from Dr. Kroll’s report. The Natural Resource Board voted to get the ball rolling on implementing these changes today. I heard a lot of positive testimony from hunters and sportsman’s groups about these changes, thought you might be interested.

If anybody has questions post them and I will ask Mark...

Standard Season Structure – Statewide
Archery and Gun License Tag Availability:
 Central and Southern Farmland Zones: One buck and one antlerless tag per license. Starting in 2015, hunters will need to designate the unit and the land type (public or private) for the antlerless permit included with the license. Additional antlerless tags may be purchased if available.
 Northern and Central Forest Zones: One buck tag issued with license. Additional antlerless tags may be purchased if available.
 Additional antlerless tags: $12 statewide and will be unit (county) and land type (public vs. private) specific. The number of public vs. private land tags will be based on the goal and the percent of deer range in each land type in the unit.

The changes to the season dates are as follows:
*There will no longer be a 1 day season closure for archery the day before gun season. Bow season will run from September 13th 2014 thru January 4th 2015

*December Antlerless Hunt - December 11 - NO CHANGE TO DATES - Central Farmland Zone and Central Forest Zone only -

*Holiday Hunt
Dec. 24 – Jan. 1, 2015 Antlerless Only
Southern Farmland Zone only

Looks like wee will get to bow hunt January 2nd thru 4th for bucks.

I have a map showing the new zones, but I am at work and can't post pictures here... If someone can post it here for me PM me your email address and I will forward it to you to post.

Get rid of the December anterless hunt any where in northern wi. Can not emphasize this enough.

North of highway 8 for sure and possibly highway 64.

Hate the December doe hunt and the holiday hunt. The holiday hunt perhaps a little more.

Im not too thrilled about the holiday hunt being doe only. The only reason i have hunted it the last couple of years was for the opportunity to shoot a buck if i hadn't already gotten one. They pretty much swapped the october doe hunt for december.

If you read the rules I posted, NO... No more december doe hunt, and your only aloud 1 buck with gun, and one buck with bow. And the "Holiday hunt" is now doe only.

So I wonder if you can bowhunt for bucks during the holiday hunt now which is antlerless only now.

Actually now that I think of it you probably can since it says archery is Sept - Jan

it looks to be an improvement. I wish they would raise the extra doe tags from 12 dollars to 20 dollars a piece.

Didn't know if the CWD zone was separate from the southern farmland...

I believe what Dan is reporting but I'm very suprised to see the CWD zone NOT having EAB. The disease prevalence is actually increasing despite the extreme lowering of deer #s. Not saying I'm for this... but if this prion ever crosses species (which it can) it could be disasterous for humans.

Looks like "bonus buck" program will still remain in effect with a 3 buck max

Esentially... it now looks like the whole lower 1/3 of the state is EAB ruling similar to CWD but with a cap of 3 bucks
