bumping and dumping ?

Just wondering if any of you use this technique that Andrae is so famous for ? I don't think I'm going to try this year, because I did not get my proper spring scouting done to locate exact beds, so I'm basically trying to learn for next year..
My question is this...
Lets say you have the exact location of this big bucks bed, so you go out there late afternoon and bump him out of his bed... Like Andrea says, now you can have your way with his bedding area and get set up, so you do just that, you hang a stand...
So the next morning you get to the stand extra early, and daylight comes and No buck shows up at his bed... my question is, do you just leave the stand set-up there, and try it again the next morning, or is this a one shot deal, and you have to rip down the set-up and move on to another spot ??? Can anyone help me out on this subject ? Dan, any suggestions to this topic ?

Let's see what Dan says, but I would think you should give it one more try the next morning, still a virgin sit according to Andre. I would have noted the wind direction and such, so that when those conditions repeat, you will know there is a good chance he is in there again. That being said I wouldn't spend more than 2 days in a row, because, if he didn't show again you probably pushed him to another bed.

I just read about this in Field & Stream, and I'm highly intrigued with it also. Seems like a pretty bold move, but it makes a lot of sense. I'd like to hear all about it.

Mainly, how long will it typically take the buck to come back? Is this something you can do in the morning or middle of the day, and set up and hunt right then? Or would you not expect him to be back til morning?

Also, it seems this strategy would work best when you DON'T know exactly where he is bedded. This is a way to find out and hunt him all in one. I would think that if you have his bed pinned down, you'd be better off catching him coming out of it without pushing him out of the area. I don't know.

Rather than rewriting what I wrote in a post about the method last May, I will copy and paste that segment here:
Andrea sets his standards pretty high... There is usually only one buck any given property he hunts. Knowing the exact bedding spot is critical in killing the buck.
Although bucks get pretty edgy about harassment they do have to put up with hikers, farm dogs, coyotes, and wolves in some areas and often get bumped out of there beds. They will put up with a certain extent of this type of harassment. Sometimes they will put up with one bump, sometimes several, sometimes 1st bump and there gone... I often tease Andrea about his "bump em and dump em" tactic and tell him in the public marsh we call it "Bump em and never ever ever see them again" but to be honest, it has sometimes worked here too.
There are ways to make it work better too... We have two definitions of a "bump". A hard bump is when you aggressively push a buck from his bed with the intent of him relocating to a new spot. A soft bump is where you move him, but try not to scare the crap out of him.
To soft bump a deer, a person does not want to walk directly towards the animal. Angles make it appear to the animal that your just passing by. Also, when the deer stands or trots off don't stop walking make it appear as though you could care less what the deer does. On Andreas property they are used to atv's occasionally crossing the property so he will sometimes cruise past a buck bedding area with the ATC and see what gets up...
Timing is important too... Really, its probably thee most important thing in bump and dump hunting... Bucks should be bumped about an hour before dark, or just before they normally get to there feet... The reason for this is because a deer that is bumped just before he would normally get up is more likely to just go about his normal night time routine after settling back down. Then at the end of the night he just goes back to the same old bed out of habit... When bumped early in the day they will head to another bedding area, then there is a good chance they will bed in the new spot rather than the spot you bumped them from.
It should also be said that Andrea usually knows these bedding areas pretty well, it is not a good idea to get scent near the bed or near the entrance rought you suspect the buck will use. Its important for the buck to believe the bump just wandered through. If he hints human scent on his way to the bed, he will likely turn tail...

yep, I get the whole concept of trying for a soft bump so you don't drive him out of the area, and I also understand that the later in the day the better for bumping... I guess my question is, would you try it two or three days in a row if he does not show and moon phase or weather pattern is just right ?
Because I'm guessing you don't want that buck to see your set-up when you are not there, right ? especially if you are set-up right on the bed...

The original term Andrae coined "BUMP & DUMP" meant to find the buck bedding area by jumping the buck out of his bed, and then setting up where he jumped to kill him the next morning...
However, Andrae has had success using the technique in known buck bedding areas as well as finding new ones and then setting up.
Andrae told me the other day that he would be willing to come on the site once a week or so and answer questions personally if we create an "Ask Andrae" thread... Probably won't start till after hunting season though.

If he don't show the next morning and the wind was right for him to bed there I would say odds are he is not coming back the next day either. He likely relocated to another one of his buck bedding areas. It is possible, but odds went down dramatically in my opinion after the 1st sit.
However, if you watched my Hill country DVD you saw Andrae shoot his highest scoring buck the second day sitting over its bed, so it is possible, but like Black Squirrel said, after two days give it a nice long break.

Who was the author? and who was quoted in the article?
What issue?

You would want to jump him in the evening not long before dark so as to have him NOT re-bed somewhere else and just go about his routine and come back. Read the quoted post I put earlier in this post.

Two days in a row at the most... And personally I would probably abandon after the 1st unsuccessful day until the buck had plenty of time to settle back in. ( about 30 to 60 days )
Thats my opinion, I would have to ask Andrae his opinion.

It was the latest issue. The one with all the gear reviews in it. They credited Andrae for the technique. I don't remember the author.

This website coutinues to be the best informative hunting website that I know of... It's very kind of you and your friends to share your hunting logic with us rookies ( Well, I would say I'm a rookie anyway) Thanks again !

Sorry, did not get the quotes part right, but I think everyone knows I wrote the last paragraph and Dan wrote the one before about Andrae coming on the site...

The ask Andre thread would be great... I have a few questions, 1 of does he remember me, or my grandfather. See when LW 1st hit the market I was around 11-12, Im 28 now and my grandfather who brought me into bowhunting was a old man who tinkered with everything. He made the 1st deer cart Ive ever seen from old bicycles. Anyways, we would goto hunting shows and my grandfather would talk to Andere forever about his stands and what my GF thought would be vast improvments, Andre offered me a deal on his alpha and sticks when they 1st came out, and I declined... being youg and smaller at the age I opeted for a climber, which Andre did not have at the time. As my hunting and I grew, I went to lone wolf after trying many treestands. Im currently on my 3rd set of LW's, the assualt and sticks. I had it 2 seasons ago and loved it, but tried the climebr (hated it... a littl) so now Im back. Anyways I know Andre has meet thousands, but Im curious if he remebers... its been a long time, but LW has always been the best! Thanks Dan.

That would be a huge and popular thread, making other forums very jealous in my opinion.
