No Shortcuts. No Excuses. No Regrets.

When I first started hunting I was drawn to the bottoms because of all the sign. It took me a while to realize the sign in my bottoms was being primarily left during the night. The other problem I have had with the bottoms on my land is the way my ridges are set up. It is almost impossible to hunt my bottoms without getting winded. The wind constantly swirls and changes direction down there. Two years ago I made a decision to get out of my bottoms and only hunt high just see if I noticed a difference. I noticed I was rarely getting winded when I stayed high on the ridges. Someone with more skill when it comes to understanding the wind may have better results than I. For now I usually stay on the higher elevations.

I hunt a rivers edge along a low land parcel, but I wouldn't consider it a bottoms area. I love being able to get to this particular end of the land by boat as opposed to bumping deer out walking in from the other direction. I also enjoy the combination of peacefulness of hearing and watching the water flow past, not to mention the entertainment of all the wildlife I tend to encounter when I'm sitting near the water. Nothing quite like having a deer step into the middle of the river with the water rushing around its legs as it cools down and gets a drink - makes great video, too.

The river floods the bottoms up to a couple feet in the spring, however, and makes for a mosquito haven in the summer so early season can get uncomfortable even with a bug net on. Still, the sign is there, but their not bedding on my particular piece along the river - only traveling it. During the rut window is when I like to sit it because the bucks seem to cruise the edge of it for what I imagine is solely to check on doe bedding further down river in areas like Dan points out - inside protruding bends/points of the river, but I haven't exactly put all the pieces together.

The downside of sitting right over the water as I like to do is the gurgle sound steals my hearing away from me pretty good.
