Re: Possible new MI state record typical
I stay in touch with some guys from Michigan, who I meet in the Midwest hunting public land, they are slowly liking home a bit more and more each year. They make it look pretty easy out here hunting, but I have seen them sit all day for 10 days straight, they are no joke.

An open sighted 12 Gauge at 200 yards in 20 mph wind? That is one HECK of a shot. If someone had told me that when I was out hunting I would probably laugh at them!

You forgot to mention smooth bore. Not sure how far you would have to hold above the buck to connect. That was one heck of a lob shot for sure.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

This buck holds a little more credibility than the Iowa spoof buck. This buck is tagged, the hunter is not all blacked out, there is some published information on the buck, and the hunter is named. The 200 yard shot with a smooth bore shotgun doesn't help the credibility. The split brow tines don't help the score.
I will check with my big buck Guru and see what he says. You are wise not to believe it is a state record until it is a proven fact. This is about the 3rd or fourth state/world record we've heard about in 2013. I like it when people tell me stuff. I like it even better when they show me and can prove it.

Nobody say's we don't have big deer here. We have a lot of big deer. Just not anywhere near as many as in Wisconsin, Iowa, etc. and ours are concentrated mostly in the lower 20% of the state where that deer was shot and where it is almost entirely private. Although there is good public down there too.

I have also been noticing that our state is starting to look promising with all the QDM co-op's popping up in recent years, a large area of antler restrictions that just started, etc. Plus the baiting ban (ignored in most area's) helped get some deer into an older age class which got people interested in passing young bucks. I have been trying not to get to excited and count my chickens before they hatch though. In a couple years it should be a lot clearer as to what direction this state is heading.

Re: Possible new MI state record typical
Here is a quote from the guy that shot the buck, Jeff Toy, on November 27, 2013 at 8:18pm
"Tonight this was scored at a green score of 194 2/8 gross"
It's heck of a buck, but it won't beat the state record of 198 0/8. I'm thinking maybe low 180's net.
