Why does shooting a buck have to be such a drag

Unread postby Tadmdad » Thu Dec 26, 2013 6:10 am

Awhile back we had a discussion about how we get a buck out once he is on the ground. Using carts, sleds, dragging, tractors, atv's etc. Was surprised how few of us actually butchered and packed out the buck, maybe it isn't practical in most hunting locations and it's the path of least resistance. We use the "gutless method", videos can be found on Youtube on how to do this, and just as the name implies, you never gut the deer. You quarter, bone, and pack the meat, and leave bone and hide behind. Usually it takes us about an hour on a deer, to get them ready to pack, and 1 person can handle a good size buck, with a freighter or frame pack.

Image

On a portage hunt in the BWCAW this year, typical buck for this area about 200lbs f.d., checked the GPS, 1.2 miles back to the boat. To far to drag, and no need to portage the whole animal. Get this buck ready to pack out.

Image

Step 1, remove 2 legs and start skinning both legs

Image

Step 2, skin body to the backbone, lay out hide still attached, to keep hair away from meat.

Image

Step 3, remove hind quarter and font shoulder

Image

Step 4, remove backstrap

Image

Step 5, remove neck roast, brisket, flank steak and trim. Good time to remove opposite side legs and start skinning

Image

Step 6, cover back the hide, flip over to do opposite side

Image

Step 7, skin out to backbone

Image

Step 8, repeat step 3, 4, 5 removing quarters, neck roast, flank and trim. Remove inner tenderloin along the backbone, can be seperated
from the backbone without opening the paunch

Image

Step 9, flip over and remove opposite tenderloin

Image

Step 10. at this point, quarters are ready to be boned, 2 meat bags are helpful to put in freighter pack. Done

Takes about a 1- 11/2 hours to get ready for the pack out. This buck yielded 89 lbs of boned meat, with a good pack is manageable to do in 1 trip, by 1 hunter.

Great tutorial and visual aids.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Wish I could do that here but in WI we can only divide into 5 pcs and everything except for the guts has to be packed out. I would kill a lot more deer in remote spots if I had a better option. Unless they are huge it's just too much hassle for my aging back with the rules we have now.

When you lay that shoulder on the ground like in picture 4 are you but worried about getting dirt on it? Also, I assume you're hunting from the ground...else how do you pack out all the meat, your tree stand, and possibly the head to mount.... That'd be like 100 pounds or more.

Understand, have read the laws in WI, quite surprising being WI is a CWD state. Many states it's illegal to transport any bone, and the skull has to be cleaned of matter, out of the state the animal was taken, believe the purpose is to minimize the spread of CWD. Also, it is illegal in many states to bring in a animal from a CWD state, with any bone or skull matter. Maybe I'm missing something, but seems you couldn't be legal on both ends the way some of the state laws are written?

Snow helps some, but you certainly have to wash and trim the meat before it is put in the freezer ready to eat. In this case I was in a treestand, had to make another trip the next day to pull the stand. Should have had a wolf tag, because there was 5 wolves cleaning up the remains the next morning, they are very efficient, nothing goes to waste in nature.

WI changed the law recently, we are allowed to qaurter, but we still have to take out everything except the guts, but is it legal to take 2 trips? I don't know but if we are not allowed to take 2 trips then the new law is not very helpful
