Yeah. We always feel that way about the ones that elude us. There is something mystical, magical about how he dropped his sheds in the only place I would have found them. In a way, he protected all of the deer in that area because I refused to shoot anything in that spot for fear of ruining my hunt. And since I only ran into bucks in other areas, including a big fat mature one viewtopic.php?f=3&t=22614, he indirectly protected those as well.

It's really cool that he left me his sheds. For reference sake, it is early for bucks to shed here. A few shed in January last year but the majority shed in February and March. I searched for sheds a lot last year, but these are the first ones I found.

Well congrats on getting the sheds anyway. What I was afraid of....in my area anyway, when the bucks starting hitting feed hard (during daylight also) it isn't long and they will shed.

Good luck with him next year.

Thats not a bad way to end the season. At least you have a good story and some monster sheds to show for it. I really hope you meet up with this buck again and killem. Great job man that is really cool. Its gonna be a long off season for ya though.

what an awesome parting gift. That will give you some motivation for next season, as if you didn't have enough anyway. Good Luck and thanks for sharing.

DEERSLAYER wrote:Sad and cool at the same time. To bad you didn't get him before he shed, but getting his sheds is awesome. Hopefully by the end of the day you will be posing with the cow buck or another good one.

You should put a tape to him and let us know what you come up with.

When I use the Antler Geek app (great app), I come up with 161.5". I wasn't sure how to score the 3 point paddle, so I scored it from the base to the middle point and then where the two side points would meet the middle point if the antler were actually structured like that.

I would have been happy to take one of the lesser deer hanging around him. I wish I could have stayed warm longer yesterday. Maybe i'll try my hand at making myself a HBS like Rancid Crabtree posted earlier viewtopic.php?f=22&t=22884&p=289216&hilit=dyi+heater+body+suit+hbs#p289216.

And by the way, all of the pictures posted were from Covert Cameras. The first few I posted were from the Covert Black model. I replaced it with a couple of MP-E5 models that I received after MN Hunter tipped us of on the 50$ no shipping deal that occurred on black Friday. I thought the daylight photos on the MP-E5s were as good as any I've seen and far superior to the other two cheepo's I got. The night time pics were just ok. Also, the battery life on those MP-E5 seems to be outstanding, with the battery meter, never budging since the day I put the batteries in (the average night time temps have been around -30C before the windchill effect).

And here he is wishing me better luck next year

I'll be setting up a mineral lick to keep an eye on him when I start seeing my backyard deer start hitting it again.

Cool for sure.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
