3yr quest for 7yr old deer!

Unread postby RUTIN » Tue Aug 17, 2010 8:37 am

Well here it is.... 2010! Ive been sleepless over a deer i named Pinnacle since 2008. Ive had a solid obsession and addiction to locating and tracking this deer down. I had him pegged with over 200 pics in 2008 and then got sent away to Rescue Tech school for firefighting right before season started.

In 2009 the crop change, screwed my place up since the crp field was his bedding & the farmer leased the property out and they disced the CRP under and made is beans.... I tried later that year once the beans were off to pull a bump and dump. I slipped into the swamp with the wind in my face and knew where he was bedding and very gently bumped him and setup for the next day. The next morning came..... NO PINNACLE... and thats how the story went all year except one day during th rut.

Finally, its 2010 and the crop rotation is back to a good setup. I set a cam out on this property in early may and got a of a deer on it with split brows several times, but hes since pulled the slip. I hadnt seen pinnacle in over a year since the B&D. I was out doing a little late preseason scouting and found some HUGE tracks. I quickly setup a trail cam and called my buddy Justin. I was really excited and quickly told him there was something good in the area again. It was driving me crazy to see what was in the area. I set the cam up on Aug. 12th and went back to check real quick on the 15th,only bc i have a quick in & out access with minimal scent laid. I also did it 20 mins before a heavy rain. Only two different deer on the cam, but to my suprise my 7yr old arch enemy was staring me in the eyes! It was Pinnacle! He is 7yrs old this year, still has a broken front leg, and has become a typical 12pt. He hasnt grown much since 08' and the only thing i can think is holding him back is his leg or possible genetics now. This buck is #1 on the hitlist for 2010 and i will keep everyone updated on the journey with this 7yr old

Nice buck! Reminds me of one that used to live in the public marsh behind my house. He lived to be 9 1/2 and every year his rack got bigger. One guy up the street had almost all of his shed antlers. Everybody in town was after him. He broke his leg at 9 1/2... That was the 1st year I seem him from a tree stand and had him at 8 yards but he got away unscathed. A neighbor shot him during that gun season while walking thru the marsh to a stand. He scored over 217 net...
