I'm shooting the 145". Life is to busy to wait on something that may or may never happen. Besides what is shooting that 160" or bigger gonna do for you?

160 public land deer are pretty rare, what if I was hallucinating? Still I would be happy to take a 140 and to be honest I'm happy to take a 120 on the land I hunt. When I feel like I am ready to chase only the largest of the bucks I will do so, until then I won't worry about it too much.

I wouldn't call a 145 inch buck average...I'd probably shoot the 145 if I had another state to hunt. In a one buck state, I might pass the 145 if I had a decent possibility of taking that 165 inch buck. It all boils down to variables and what you are willing to accept as a happy outcome.

At this point in the game Id likely shoot the 145. Hopefully someday I have more of that size plus or minus on the wall that I can really hole out for the 160 caliber deer.

I can make lots of claims.

Like that if it's early in the season, I could pass on the smaller hoping to get on the bigger.

This is getting somewhat easier as the seasons go by, but there are still moments of weakness. ;)

A couple variables here. If I have two buck tags (Illinois, Wisconsin, etc) and I don't have one filled this year, you bet I shoot and don't think twice. Unless you killed 10 or more 140" bucks, I doubt any sane person would pass a 140". IF I had already shot a 130" to 145" that year and another 140" pops out I probably would pass since I've already been graced by the hunting gods. Hold out that second tag for the 160"
