Mid-season gun deer tactics?
I'm sure this has been touched on but with this late season gun opener here in WI, what are some of your mid-season tactics for gun season? Seems like deer are staying put and not moving much. Even with this fresh snow we had, there's not much for tracks and bedding seems scattered. I don't do a lot of deer drives, but this may have to be an option going into the last couple of days here. This maybe more of a desperation post than anything.
Thanks for your input.

Re: Mid-season gun deer tactics?
I still find them in the primary bedding... However, with the snow, people track them a lot into the bedding areas and it gets tough to find clean areas without human intrusion. Snow is great for trackers, bad for bed sitters in public areas...
One tactic that has worked well for me both gun and bow season is to circle known buck bedding at a safe distance and see if tracks go in, but don't come out... Or track a good track till you hut a known bedding area and then assume he is in there and set up.

Great advise as always Dan. Thanks.
Might have to switch it up a bit and get aggressive before the season ends.

Re: Mid-season gun deer tactics?
Nice deer! It's cool to see other guys have success with Dan's tactics. I was a little unsure about hunting primary beds after the pressure was on during gun season this week. Nonetheless, I decided to sneak up to a big buck bedding area that I had stumbled upon about a month ago. Sure enough, right where Dan's tactics would lead me to believe there should have been a buck, there was a really big 8 walking around in this bedding area without a care in the world at 10:00am. This is a spot right on the edge of a wide open cut corn field only a couple of hundred yards from the county road. Simply a spot everyone else overlooks because there isn't much to it. But surrounded by highly pressured fingers and woodlots, there he was holed up. It didn't end with me tagging him because he bolted on me unexpectedly... either the wind swirled or he seen me... I'm not sure. But the fact that he was there like I planned gave me a lot of confidence that I will be able to check similar spots or hunt similar spots in the future and find similar results.

You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.
